Thai AirAsiaXTassapon Bijleveld, Chief Executive Officer of Thai AirAsia X, stated that “This is Thai AirAsia X’s (XJ) first ever direct route between Sydney, Australia and Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi), Thailand.” The route was launched initially with four flights per week on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, with plans to expand based on the strong potential for future growth in demand. Marketing efforts for the route have been well supported in Thailand, in line with the recovering tourism industry post-COVID-19.

Thailand is a trendy destination for Australian travellers, not only to Bangkok but to provinces including Phuket, Krabi and Chiang Mai. AirAsia is well known for its commitment to great value fares and a commitment to the highest standards of health, safety and well-being. The return flight from Sydney to Bangkok departed with nearly 100% of all seats sold at over 95% load factor. We thank our airport and industry partners who have helped make these new services a reality.”

“This service will provide a great, low-cost option for Australians looking to secure travel over the busy end of year holidays to one of Asia’s most exciting destinations.”

Thai AirAsia X will serve Sydney – Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi-BKK) four times a week on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday starting 2 December 2022. The airline also has recently launched Melbourne – Bangkok to operate three times a week on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, starting 1 December.

Importantly, this is the only low-cost direct service on this route which we are confident will continue to prove very popular.

Australians love Thailand, and visitors to Bangkok can now experience dynamic shopping, rich art, culture, renowned cuisine and nightlife at great value on our comfortable and affordable widebody aircraft.

Bangkok is a fantastic city with excellent connectivity to the regions of Thailand and is a trendy destination for Australian leisure and business travellers. Consumer demand is only expected to increase during the end-of-the-year peak season when Asia’s low-cost leader will also be carrying out a variety of campaigns and promotions to stimulate air travel for Australian and Thai tourists.

Greg Botham, Chief Commercial Officer Sydney Airport, said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Thai AirAsia X as our newest international carrier as we continue to support the recovery of our international network. At the same time, Thailand is a regional hub from which AirAsia offers a range of flights Australians love to travel, including to Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi, as well as to over 100 destinations across Asia.

The inaugural flight landed at 2.15 pm local Sydney time with a load factor of around 80%.

This latest route allows Thai travellers to visit Sydney, Australia, at an affordable price.

Thai AirAsia X touched down in Sydney for the first time delivering the only low-cost, direct services between Sydney and Bangkok to meet substantial pent-up demand.
