Australian Parliament HouseAs the May budget approaches, not-for-profit organizations are facing a funding crunch, with little increase in funding expected to be allocated. According to Jo Scard, CEO and founder of Fifty Acres, a prominent lobbyist agency, the advice from many ministers and MPs across the Labor government has been that there won’t be much in the way of new funding for organizations currently lobbying the government. However, Scard believes that next year, these initiatives will be seriously considered as Labor works towards a surplus and major budget and tax reform.

Fifty Acres represents clients across various sectors seeking funding and regulatory change and has recently had conversations with ministers covering the portfolios of health, mental health, employment, industry, women, social services, youth, and more. While the lack of funding may seem discouraging, Scard emphasizes that engagement with the government is a journey and takes time to ensure that the intricacies of each cause are known in the corridors of the parliament house.

“If you plan to continue your lobbying efforts and seek funding or change as part of the 2024/25 budget process, it is time to get started now on a robust government engagement strategy,” says Scard. She has served as an advisor under the Rudd and Gillard Governments and has strong connections with contemporaries across the parliament.

To raise the profile of not-for-profit organizations, Scard suggests hosting dynamic events within parliament, attracting influential connections and progressing their cause. For example, Fifty Acres recently helped a client who works in youth mental health to host an event that attracted 60 ministers, MPs, and senators.

The current lack of funding highlights the need for not-for-profit organizations to step up their lobbying efforts and engage with the government to ensure their causes are heard. As Scard notes, it’s time to get started on a robust government engagement strategy to make progress towards the 2024/25 budget process. With perseverance, engagement, and collaboration, not-for-profit organizations can overcome the funding crunch and continue to make positive changes in the community.
