The competition among snowboarders was at an all-time high in Thredbo yesterday as new and old rivalries were rekindled at the 8th Annual Transfer Banked Slalom.
Renowned among Australia’s snowboarding community as one of the biggest and best events in the calendar, yesterday’s race saw over 280 riders shoot their shot at victory in eight different divisions.

The conditions couldn’t have been better for a fun day on the mountain, with the sun shining over the event following 10cm of fresh snowfall the night prior.

Each racer got two runs down the custom Banked Slalom Course, getting their speed up and being challenged by tight turns as the crowd cheered on from the sideline.

Among the legendary line-up of riders included four-time Olympian Scotty James, Thredbo’s 2022 Olympic Ambassadors Ben Tudhope, Tess Coady, Valentino Guseli, Josie Baff and Jye Kearney as well as industry legends Robbie Walker and Nate Johnstone.

“The Transfer Banked Slalom is Australia’s most prestigious snowboarding event. It is the tournament of turns and I think we are going to see a lot of riders really going for it today. It will definitely be a battle,” said Thredbo’s 2022 Olympic Ambassador Valentino Guseli ahead of his race.

And a battle it was, with industry legend Robbie Walker taking out gold on the podium in the Mens Open division followed by Valentino Guseli and Nate Johnstone in second and third place respectively. The Womens Open division was equally strong, with Mia Brookes taking out gold followed by Freya Hammerlein with silver and Tess Coady with bronze.

What’s more, there were also multiple generations from the same families securing spots on the podium, with father and son duo Brad George and Juan George both placing in their divisions as well as mother and daughter duo Marguerite Cossettini and Freya Hammerlein.

And the good vibes were just as high as the competition, with riders finishing up their race and heading straight to the afterparty and awards presentations at Merritts Mountain House, with the winners taking home a huge stack of prizes thanks to Sims, Yeti & Pirate Life!

Congratulations to all of the riders who competed yesterday and thank you to Transfer, Sims, Yeti & Pirate Life for teaming up with us to make the event such a big success.
