Travellers with a passion for adventure and a heart for nature will be able to experience the magnificent beauty of the Great Barrier Reef while also contributing to world-leading work to protect and restore this natural wonder for future generations.
For the first time, the Great Barrier Reef Foundation is leading a unique tour of Queensland’s magnificent Whitsundays with two of its scientists showcasing some of the Reef-saving projects in action.
Over five days from 3-7 August 2022, the Whitsundays trek will explore the pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters of this world-famous archipelago by kayak.
While known for its breathtaking scenery, the Whitsundays is also a crucial habitat for thousands of species such as turtles and manta rays, providing a safe home for wildlife to rest, feed, shelter and breed.
However these islands and their connected reefs and ecosystems are being impacted by climate change and need our help to recover from more frequent severe weather events such as coral bleaching and cyclones.
Through its Reef Islands Initiative, the Great Barrier Reef Foundation is working with community partners, Traditional Owners and tourism operators to restore damaged parts of the Reef and protect critical habitats for generations to come.
Trek participants will see first-hand why protecting the Reef is so important and directly contribute to this vital work by raising funds in the lead up to the adventure.
The trek includes an exclusive tour of a coral restoration site with the Foundation’s Whitsundays Project Manager, Johnny Gaskell, and Executive Director of Projects and Partnerships Theresa Fyffe. Participants will see and learn about the new corals being planted to repopulate and protect this critical ecosystem.
Great Barrier Reef Foundation Managing Director Anna Marsden said we must work together to find solutions to the growing number of threats facing the Reef.
“The Reef needs us at our best, now more than ever,” Ms Marsden said.
“Insufficient global action on climate change is taking a serious toll on the health of coral reefs around the world and this is the critical decade in which to act with urgency.
“There is hope. Science tells us if we act now, we can double the likelihood of having healthy coral reefs into the future. By joining our Reef kayak adventure, you will be a critical part of this work and make a positive impact for our Reef.”
This extraordinary Whitsundays Reef kayak tour costs $2,730 per person plus $390 registration fee and includes eco-friendly accommodation, all meals, equipment and exclusive tours.
