For a joyous dose of Aussie humour, with digs at aspects of travel and responses to the pandemic, you can’t beat the latest TV summer commercial for Australian lamb.
The ad places Australia firmly back on the map, after remaining in isolation for so long it forgot about the world and the world forgot about Australia.
The theme is vaguely reminiscent of the 2018 tongue-in-cheek New Zealand tourism campaign that aimed to crack the mystery of why the country is often left off world maps.
The message of the latest Aussie production: Share the Lamb, 100% Australian – though ‘The Lost Country of the Pacific’ is as much about tourism as it is about lamb.
The ad shows a startling discovery – a whole world exists outside fortress Australia. Stand by for plenty of travel industry references. Idle workers at an airport with hardly any planes and air traffic controllers playing dominoes give way to widespread delight as travel revives and travellers return – including backpackers.
“Thank God we don’t have to pick our own fruit anymore,” an Australian couple rejoices.
A lot of hearty fun, well worth watching and three minutes long!
