We all love facts, so let us start the article with enumerating the things that make Slovakia worth visiting:

  • Here the European geographical central point is situated;
  • It occupies the second place (after Austria) on the number of forests;
  • Slovenská bryndza, the local type of cheese, is made of non-pasteurized sheep milk and can be produced only in Slovakia;
  • Ice-hockey is the most popular sports and in 2002 the national team has won the gold medal on the World Championship;

Things to see

If you have already seen the places that are stated in the list above, let us tell you more about other must-visit locations that tourists can’t miss. First of all, you should devote a day or two to exploring Bratislava – Slovakia’s capital. Once it was a ghost city but now its old town immerses in greenery and colors. Here you can find traditional facades, lively cafes, and luxury boutiques.

Take one step aside and you’ll see the industrial quarter filled with skyscrapers and modern buildings. And all of it under the careful supervision of the hilltop castle. By right Bratislava is considered the fastest-changing European city.

Here is our personal list of the best things to do in Bratislava:

  • Take the red tourist tram to learn more about the city’s history, which stops at the castle and gives you a spectacular view over Bratislava. It costs 10 Euros for adults and 5 Euros for children;
  • Take a slow walk through the old town, try out local cuisine and grab a beer on the squares talking to the locals;
  • Go to the Sky Bar to watch the sunset and don’t forget to try out their Thai food and cocktails, which are definitely one of the best in the city.

Once you are done with the capital go to the High Tatras, which were named the best destination to visit in Europe during summer according to the ‘Best in Europe list for 2019 from Lonely Planet.

When consulting the guide book you may read that the High Tatras have a mythical landscape of peaks and waterfalls, and there you can meet brown bears. This mountain range has a variety of trails for hiking and offers other entertainments like boating and ice skating on the Štrbské Pleso glacial lake. Once you get to the top, enjoy local hospitality in huts that are also called chaty. And don’t forget about the Lomnica Peak – the best destination for winter holidays in Europe!

To increase the tourist attraction of the country, the Slovakian government has a compulsory employer’s recreation contribution and a reduced value-added tax on accommodation. Such an approach has been rather fruitful: entrepreneurs in tourism mark higher incomes and influx of tourists. However, it may take ten or even twenty years to have the changes influence the lives of locals through increased salaries and better living conditions.
