Airbus Dominates Boeing in APAC Market Amidst Aeronautical Rivalry. In a dramatic shift within the Asia-Pacific (APAC) commercial aviation sector, Airbus emerged as the clear frontrunner, leaving its main rival, Boeing, struggling. This trend is starkly illustrated by Airbus’s robust order book in crucial APAC markets such as India, China, and Singapore from 2020 to 2024, according to recent data released by GlobalData, a prominent data analytics firm.

Airbus’s success story in APAC is underscored by a whopping 1,489 aircraft orders during this period, significantly overshadowing Boeing’s 561. This surge in orders reflects a growing preference among leading airlines and leasing companies in the region, which have increasingly favoured Airbus over Boeing. Notable carriers like Indigo Airlines, Air India, China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines have substantially boosted their fleets with Airbus models, turning away from Boeing, particularly in light of recent controversies surrounding the 737 Max aircraft.

The discrepancy in company performance is also evident in delivery numbers. Airbus has successfully delivered 2,717 aircraft between 2020 and 2024, a figure that starkly contrasts with Boeing’s 1,594 deliveries. Boeing’s efforts to ramp up production of its once best-selling 737 Max have been thwarted by regulatory challenges. In January 2024, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) temporarily halted the expansion of Boeing’s production capacity, citing a need for a thorough audit of its existing lines, which has adversely affected its delivery schedules and further dented its reputation.

Gone Sai Kiran, an Aerospace and Defense Analyst at GlobalData, highlighted the strategic decisions of regional operators that have significantly tilted the balance in Airbus’s favour. “The decision by several Chinese operators to exclude Boeing from their procurement lists appears to be influenced by the broader US-China trade tensions,” Kiran noted.

Moreover, the FAA’s recent directives requiring airlines to stop operating specific Boeing models have led to order cancellations, tipping the competitive advantage towards Airbus in this closely contested market.

This shift in market dynamics is not just a blow to Boeing’s operational strategies but also reshapes the competitive landscape in one of the most crucial aviation markets globally. As Boeing scrambles to regain its footing, Airbus’s ascent in APAC highlights its strategic prowess. It sets the stage for a new era in commercial aviation, where reliability and trust are paramount.

As the aviation industry continues to recover and evolve post-pandemic, Airbus’s stronghold in APAC positions it well to capitalize on future growth opportunities, leaving Boeing with significant ground to recover if it hopes to restore its former stature.
