2019 – ITB Tourism Trade Fair in Berlin
The world of tourism are all back in their respective countries after a week long program at the ITB Tourism Trade Fair in Berlin aimed at positioning their country as the No.1 Tourism Destination. Success will be determined as time goes on, but for now the challenges seen will be analysed and discussed with tourism stakeholders in the four corners of the world. What is clear is that tourism does not, and it will not be consolidate by itself and it requires a dynamic private sector trade working hand – in – hand with its facilitator, the Government.World News / Travel Wire News writes on ITB Tourism:- Tourism industry in rude health as ITB Berlin comes to an end in Germany. Despite a slowdown in the world economy, demand within the travel industry remains stable. As ITB Berlin ends, the economic outlook for the global industry in 2019 is positive once again. Trade visitor numbers at the show rose to 113,500, a three per cent increase compared with last year, emphasising the important role played by the event. ”ITB Berlin is of great importance, particularly in times of widespread uncertainty. Even in a digitalised world, it is not possible for hi-tech communications to replace the confidence-building measure that face-to-face meetings and a direct exchange between business partners on issues concerning the global industry represent. That is why ITB Berlin functions”, said Christian Göke, chief executive of Messe Berlin. The sustained growth in all areas of the industry in Germany is due once again to the positive situation in the employment market and a generally buoyant mood among consumers. For Germany as a travel destination, the fact that domestic tourism is booming is especially welcome news.

Seychelles is blessed by being positioned as the ‘Bridge between Africa and Asia’ as was pushed through the islands Membership of PATA (the Pacific & Asia Travel Association). This collaboration is now no more as Seychelles moves out of this tourism gathering. “For better of for worst, for richer or for poorer” time only will tell.

The recent PATA Conference at ITB 2019 was an eye opener for delegates present and this for many reasons. Panel discussions held by leading Tourism Destinations brought out many developing trends and visions reached after a lot of studies and research. I was fortunate to have been invited to be present and left impressed.

Dr. Taleb Rifai (former SG of the UNWTO) & Dr. Mario Hardy (PATA)
The PATA Conference at ITB discussed the ‘Positioning of Destination Brands’ and experts confirmed that this cannot be deemed to remain forever. Positioning of Brands cannot remain untouched whereas the Destination’s Brand is here and can remain so. Bearing in mind positioning of brands can also take place by itself through outside forces (press, TV, films). Remaining on top of the situation on hand remains therefore so important.
Tourism Ministers of the Year named at event during ITB 2019
Edmund Bartlett, Tourism Minister of Jamaica
& Elena Kountoura, Tourism Minister of Greece
Pictured with Edmund Bartlett, Tourism Minister of Jamaica

Greece and Jamaica Tourism Ministers are the Tourism Ministers for 2019. This recognition received during the ITB Tourism Trade Fair in Berlin comes after both these Tourism Ministers had been recognised for their continued dedication to their industry. The Minister from Greece is today being credited for having propelled her tourism industry to new heights and this is having the needed positive effects for the Greek Economy. The Jamaica Tourism Minister on his part has championed the sustainable tourism vision and spearheaded the creation of “The Global Tourism Resilience & Crisis Management Centre”.

Congratulations to both Elena & Edmund. So proud of you.

Ethiopian Airline accident

It has been confirmed that an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 heading to the Kenyan capital Nairobi has crashed near Addis Ababa. This is such sad news for the airline and for the loss of life by so many. Ethiopian Airlines has been the success story of African Aviation and this accident should not deter anyone from remaining supporters of the airline.

The cause of the accident will be announced after all investigations are completed and it will shed light on this most unfortunate accident.

We take this opportunity to extend our sincere sympathy to all grieving families who lost loved ones in this latest airline crash.

Remaining Connected – Gérard Lefebvre – President & CEO – Cleverdis

At ITB 2019 with Gérard Lefebvre – President & CEO – Cleverdis

Gérard Lefebvre, the President & CEO of Cleverdis is not just a respected partner but he is also a good and sincere friend. Gérard Lefebvre’s group of companies is also responsible for Daily News Publications at most of the biggest and most important Tourism Trade Fairs such as The Daily ITB News Magazine.
The meeting at ITB in Berlin was the opportunity to discuss tourism today as it was an opportunity to renew our friendship. We discussed what lies ahead, and analysed together the avenues of cooperation between us. I remain so proud to be able to count Gérard Lefebvre as one of my dear friends.
ICTP meeting at ITB in Berlin
Juergen Steinmetz, Alain St.Ange & Geoffey Lipman
Three of the four founding members of the International Coalition of Tourism Partners (ICTP) Juergen Steinmetz, Alain St.Ange & Geoffey Lipman met as they were together at ITB 2019 in Berlin.
Juergen Thomas Steinmetz has continuously worked in the travel and tourism industry since he was a teenager in Germany , beginning as a travel agent up through today as a publisher of eTurboNews (eTN), one of the world’s most influential and most-read travel and tourism publications. He is also Chairman of ICTP. Professor Geoffrey Lipman is the President of ICTP & Founder of Greenearth.travel. He is also the former Assistant Secretary General of UNWTO and first president of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) Professor Geoffrey Lipman, Director greenearth.travel, a global think tank network, promoting green growth and travelism – strategy, innovation and funding. He is President of the International Coalition of Tourism Partners (ICTP) and Associate of Cosmos China and Alain St.Ange is the Vice President ICTP & the former Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine of the Seychelles. He was formally the Seychelles People’s Progressive Front (SPPF) directly elected Member of the People’s Assembly for the La Digue Constituency (1979), and the Seychelles National Party (SNP) directly elected Member of the National Assembly for the Bel Air Constituency (2002). In 2009 he was appointed as the Director of Marketing for Seychelles, and in 2010 promoted to the position of C.E.O of the Seychelles Tourism Board. Elected the first President of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands Regional Organisation in 2012.  This organisation that comprises of the islands of La Reunion, Madagascar, Mauritius, Comoros, Mayotte and Seychelles.

The three ICTP founders discussed many new areas of cooperation ahead of the WTM Africa where they will be meeting and announcing many new avenues that are set to help tourism as the vital industry for Africa. “For the past 5 years ICTP has acted as a commentator on these kind of developments with a central focus on advancing Green Growth and Quality. Created and financially supported by a small group of involved industry, media and government friends it has tried to be a consistent and coherent sounding board targeting Destinations and their Stakeholders. And thanks to the broad reach of e-turbo news and our established network contacts, we believe our views have been aired and understood. The reality is however the mainstream Travel and Tourism systems have been unaffected…Growth is still king. Numbers are used to support this – highlighting the very real benefits in wealth, jobs and trade. Operational systems are aligned. Media information is channelled. But on the other side of the balance sheet, action has been marginal – impacts are at best acknowledged but scarcely responded to – whether it’s inadequate security, outdated entry processes, mounting taxes and certainly not any transformational environmental shifts. Now we have had the Summits that produced the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals – a massively complex heroic roadmap for everything, with hundreds of targets and indicators – plus the 2050 Paris Climate Agreement, which is a fundamentally important lowest common denominator for existential no carbon energy shift. New initiatives include a Bloomberg led coalition of 7000 cities to respond to Climate Change, a World Bank led Low Carbon Financing Drive and the World Economic Forum’s “4th Industrial Revolution”. And we have started an International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development – which will focus attention on our sector, in ways that have never been seen before. Our leadership organizations UNWTO, WTTC, IATA and the activities they support are preparing for these developments with an extensive list of programs and events – and if the views of those supporting genuinely transformative Sustainability and Green Growth are to be heard so must we….at the global and local levels” said the Founding Members of ICTP.

ICTP will become a genuine partnership coalition, reaching out to other groups who believe in its Green Growth and Quality vision for our sector. Engaging them to advance basic shared principles. Encouraging them to participate in the industry events set up to advance sustainable tourism in a coherent way. And most importantly providing them with the established information channels of ETN to air their views freely.
