An authentic safari experience doesn’t mean forgoing a little luxury. Just ask specialist safari operator, Sanctuary Retreats, which has recently unveiled the stylish redesign of Sanctuary Kusini Camp, the latest property to be refurbished as part of the multi-million-dollar investment program currently rolling out across its portfolio.

Over the last twenty years, the award-winning company has cemented a reputation for providing luxurious accommodation in the heart of the African wilderness. Recent improvements to its Tanzanian camps have been prompted by a desire to decrease their impact the environment, and also to further enhance the safety and comfort of guests, while ensuring they can continue to enjoy all the usual indulgences travellers have come to expect from Sanctuary Retreats – including expert guides, first-class service and delicious gourmet food.

The name Serengeti comes from the Maasai word for ‘endless plains’, and nowhere is this term more deeply felt than in the Southern Serengeti. With its rolling, endless landscapes, occasional kopje (rocky outcrop) and noticeable lack of trees, it’s the perfect setting for uninterrupted wildlife viewing year round. The only permanent camp in the Serengeti’s remote south, Sanctuary Kusini has the privilege of overlooking predator-populated plains where game viewing is in high-definition throughout the calendar and it’s one of the best places to witness the Great Migration from mid-December to the end of March when wildebeest congregate, literally, on the Camp’s doorstep.

Built around a spectacular kopje, Sanctuary Kusini’s communal areas include a dining area, lounge and library, as well as a campfire. The views from the kopje are simply sensational – the perfect spot for sundowners and stargazing. The library is well stocked with reference books to read up on the day’s discoveries, and the Camp’s experienced guides are always on hand to fill in about local knowledge where books cannot.

Twelve tastefully restyled and spacious open-plan ensuite tents feature teak wooden floors, with neutral tones and shades of green complementing the natural African setting – all of them shaded from the sun by surrounding acacia trees. Nestled in amongst the woodland, each tent has carefully thought-out views of the bush, making them the perfect hideaways for casual game viewing. A large private wooden veranda with comfortable furnishings also extends in front of each tent, offering spectacular views of grazing zebra, buffalo and other wildlife on the plains below.

Tanzania’s southern savannah plain is noted for its lion and leopard populations and is also one of the last significant Cheetah strongholds. Keen to preserve one of the few remaining natural ecosystems where the world’s fastest land animal exists, Sanctuary Kusini actively enlists its guests to help track cheetah and support of the Serengeti Cheetah Project which monitors the region’s cheetah population, offering invaluable information on behaviour, ecology, ranging and social patterns.

2019 prices at Sanctuary Kusini start from USD475 per person per night, twin share, for 1 – 3 nights, including all meals and drinks (excluding premium brands) and transfers to and from the airstrip to the Camp plus a choice of two daily shared game viewing activities.

And for even better savings, take advantage of Sanctuary Retreats’ extended stay offer 2018, when you stay at one or more of our properties including Sanctuary Kusini depending on your season of travel.
