In a significant move to enhance the tourism sector and boost the local economy, the Australian Government, in collaboration with Destination NSW, has unveiled a groundbreaking $1.4 million program to revitalise the workforce in regional New South Wales (NSW). This initiative seeks to attract a diverse group, including young people, First Nations Australians, seniors, and individuals with disabilities, to the tourism industry.
The program, funded by the Albanese Government and administered by Destination NSW under the banner of the NSW Choose Tourism Program, is a strategic response to the tourism sector’s pressing workforce shortages. It extends beyond mere employment to encompass the attraction, retention, and upskilling of personnel within the industry.
Building on the pilot’s success launched in 2022–23 on the NSW South Coast, the program’s expansion includes five innovative initiatives: a school engagement scheme, targeted career promotions, vocational webinars, mentoring by seasoned industry leaders, and professional development events. Additionally, the Choose Tourism Grant Program will collaborate with TAFE NSW to craft bespoke training programs tailored to meet the specific needs of the visitor economy.
This initiative is a testament to the government’s commitment to nurturing a skilled workforce. It aligns with the THRIVE 2030 agenda, which aims to ensure the sustainable growth of Australia’s visitor economy long into the future.
Federal Minister for Trade and Tourism, Don Farrell, emphasized the government’s dedication to this cause, stating, “The Choose Tourism Program is about inspiring Australians to work in a sector that’s not only exciting and rewarding but is also vital to the economic prosperity of so many regional communities. We are committed to fostering sustainable growth within the industry.”
Echoing Minister Farrell’s sentiments, NSW Minister for Jobs and Tourism John Graham highlighted the pivotal role of the tourism sector in regional NSW’s economic framework. “Our regional communities are brimming with passionate and talented individuals. However, the costs associated with training often deter many from pursuing their careers,” stated Graham. He added, “This program is set to change that narrative by providing free, easily accessible training opportunities that empower aspiring professionals and simultaneously fuel the growth of our $50 billion NSW visitor economy.”

This initiative represents a proactive approach by the Australian Government to address immediate employment needs and lay the groundwork for a robust, inclusive, and thriving tourism industry across regional NSW.
