Viking Cruises has confirmed that in addition to its Viking Orion, Viking Cruises’ new Viking Mars will operate in Australian waters in 2022/23.

The Australian season news which is a big boost in confidence for cruising in Australia, was announced in Italy as Viking Mars was floated out in Fincantieri’s shipyard.

With Viking Cruises growing very quickly despite COVD-19, Viking Mars has a capacity of 930 passengers and is the eighth vessel in Viking’s Ocean series.

Viking Mars will now undergo her final fitout before her debut early in 2022, when she will be named by her ceremonial godmother, Lady Carnarvon, the Countess of Carnarvon, with Lady Carnarvon’s involvement said to reflect Viking’s long association with her home, Highclere Castle, the setting for TV series Downton Abbey, which is said to have also featured on the Viking.TV platform regularly over the last 18 months.

Viking says that Viking Mars will spend her maiden season in the Mediterranean and in Northern Europe, before heading to Asia and Australia, with Viking Managing Director Australia & New Zealand Michelle Black saying details of Viking Mars’ itineraries in Australasia would be revealed in the coming months.
