Thredbo Backcountry Adventures Supported by The North Face have made a return for the winter 2021 season, giving guests an opportunity to explore Australia’s highly unique alpine terrain beyond resort boundaries.

Bookings are now open for Backcountry Adventure tours which cater to different levels of knowledge, experience and abilities and range from snowshoeing journeys into the Snowy Mountains winter wilderness to guided full-day alpine touring experiences to some of Australia’s highest peaks.

Accommodating between 2-5 people, the introductory to advanced tours will allow guests to become immersed in the raw natural beauty of the Kosciuszko Main Range, with its empty mountain faces, wildlife cameos and breathtaking solitary scenes.

Having gained extensive and verifiable experience in alpine touring here and abroad, Thredbo Backcountry Guides are keen to share their passion for the outdoors and environment with their guests. All guides hold Avalanche Safety Training (AST) and First Aid qualifications as a supplement to their detailed knowledge of the Thredbo backcountry.

Snowshoeing in the Backcountry

Running from Opening Weekend, the 3-hour snowshoeing adventure is for those looking for an alternative to riding the mountain. If guests can walk, they can snowshoe, and, snowshoe they will; through sweeping alpine vistas, granite tors and around twisted snow gums of the Australian Main Range.

Launching from 12 June 2021. Starting at $139.00 per person. Moderate fitness level required.

Thredbo Backcountry Tours Supported by The North Face set to launch 26 July 2021

A full-day guided tour through kilometres of untracked slopes and limitless space, Thredbo Backcountry Tours Supported by The North Face are for strong intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders looking to start the challenge of alpine touring or advance their skills in Australia’s undeniably unique backcountry.

Every guest is provided with a loan North Face backpack containing a beacon, probe and shovel. Snowshoes, splitboards and touring skis are available for rental at Thredbo Valley Terminal where Thredbo Rental staff can demonstrate how each touring specific equipment works.

Introduction to Backcountry Tour

Heading out to the Ramshead Range and Bogong Creek, first time backcountry enthusiasts will be introduced to specialist equipment and backcountry safety while learning skills required to negotiate simple backcountry terrain.

Starting at $199.00 per person including lift access used during the tour. Intermediate to advanced riders. 

Beyond the Boundaries Tour

This tour will take intermediate to advanced backcountry riders to locations including Mount Kosciuszko, Bogong Creek, Ramshead Range and Deadhorse Gap. Focused on backcountry skills, safety and awareness, guests will experience an unforgettable day of riding some of the best and most unique terrain Australia has to offer.

Starting at $309.00 per person including lift access used during the tour. Intermediate to advanced riders.  

Advanced Adventurer Tour

An advanced alpine touring adventure, this tour will take seasoned backcountry riders to areas including Leatherbarrel Creek, Twin Valleys and Etheridge Ridge to ride some of the best terrain Australia’s backcountry has to offer, summiting and riding some of Australia’s highest peaks.

Starting at $309 per person. Advanced riders only.

Backcountry Access Pass

Those who would rather head out independently but who still like a lift up the alpine, can purchase a Thredbo Backcountry Access Pass. This pass will give one use access of the Kosciuszko Express and will require guests to fill out an online Trip Intention Form with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service before heading out.

Available from 12 June 2021. $45 for 18 to 64 Years, $35 for 65 years and over and $10 for 17 Years and Under.

The North Face Backcountry Information Nights

Some pre-season pump up will be happening in Sydney and Canberra to celebrate the launch of Thredbo Backcountry Tours supported by The North Face.

The North Face Backcountry Information Nights will be held at 4 Pines Truck Bar in Brookvale, Sydney and Capital Brewing Co. in Canberra.  The free, register-only events are aimed to get snow fanatics excited for Australia’s growing alpine touring scene.

Attendees can learn about backcountry basics and ask questions about Thredbo Backcountry Adventures, before hearing enthralling tales from Thredbo Ambassador Tess Coady and Australian mountaineer Tim Macartney-Snape.

Raffle tickets will be available to raise funds for Thredbo environmental partners, Keeping It Cool, whose initiatives are aimed at rehabilitating the Snowy Mountains through four areas; tree-planting, community building, supporting environmental initiatives and education.

The nights will be wrap up with a screening of snowboard film, FACETS, to get everyone excited for the season ahead.
