The job interview process can be a difficult and anxiety-inducing experience for some, but certain industries are known to be more extreme than others. Reboot Digital Marketing were intrigued to discover which sectors are among the hardest, and which are easier. After analysing the relevant data, they can now reveal all.

Taking the lead as the job sector with the easiest interviews is transportation with an average difficulty rating of 2.48 out of a possible 5. According to reviews, the companies in this sector with the easiest interviews include CSX with an average difficulty rating of 2.90, FedEx (average rating of 2.50) and Old Dominion Freight Line (average difficulty score of 2.20).

Following behind in second place with an average interview difficulty score of 2.60 out of a possible 5 are roles within the consumer services sector. Among the companies with the easiest interviews are Walmart (2.20), Netflix (2.90) and McDonald’s (1.80).

Materials take third place, averaging 2.78 out of a possible 5 for interview difficulty. Among the companies with easy interviews in the materials industries are Sinopec (2.70), ConocoPhillips (2.80) and NextEra Energy (2.60).

Trailing just behind the materials industry is the miscellaneous sector (2.79 average interview difficulty rating), which covers many industries from those in photography, banking and even pet care services. Some of the companies with the easiest interviews are Automatic Data Processing Inc and Mastercard with a rating of 2.90 and Fidelity National Information Services with a rating of 2.70.

Capital goods completes the top five with an average interview difficulty rating of 2.81. For capital goods, the companies said to have easy interviews are Tesla and Toyota with ratings of 2.90 each, Boeing with an average rating of 2.80 and Lockheed Martin with the lowest score of 2.60.

 Which job industries have the hardest interviews?

On the flip side of the scale, the hardest industry for an interview is the technology sector, with an average interview difficulty rating of 3.10 out of a possible 5. Among the companies contributing to its high score are NVIDIA with an average difficulty score of 3.20 according to their previous interviewees, Adobe with a rating of 3.0 and Google with the highest score of 3.30.

With an average interview difficulty score of 3.0, the consumables sector (a.k.a. consumer non-durables) follows in second as the hardest for interviews. This sector involves the selling of goods which generally don’t last long, including the likes of brewery Anheuser-Busch who have an interview difficulty rating of 3.30. The world’s largest producers of spirits and beers Diageo is among the hardest to interview for with an average difficulty score of 3.10, alongside Procter & Gamble with 3.0.

With a score of 2.96, the energy sector places as third hardest for prospective candidates. If candidates have considered applying to TOTAL or Duke Energy Corporation, they are among the easier energy companies to interview for in the industry with a rating of 2.80 from past interviewees, as well as ABB with a rating of 2.90.
