SeaLink K’gari’s Kingfisher Bay Resort proudly launched Illumina, Queensland’s first permanent light show, in October to great fanfare. This spectacular production has transformed the western shores of K’gari (Fraser Island) into an immersive after-dark experience, celebrating the intricate ecosystem of the world’s largest sand island.
Set against K’gari’s World Heritage-listed landscape, Illumina combines cutting-edge lighting and sound to illuminate the island’s natural beauty in a vivid and enchanting way. Guests are taken on a journey through light, colour, and sound, exploring the island’s unique landscapes, flora, and fauna as night falls.
“We’ve seen an incredible appetite for this experience, and it’s been largely due to word of mouth. Most guests don’t know what to expect,” says David Hay, General Manager of SeaLink K’gari, “but they are genuinely blown away by what they see and experience in the show.
“For over three decades, our resort has been the gateway to K’gari. With Illumina, we’re offering a remarkable new experience that we believe will deepen our guests’ appreciation for and connection with the island’s natural wonders,” Mr Hay said.
No two performances are the same, as the intricacies of each evening’s show are influenced by the island’s ever-changing weather conditions, making every Illumina experience truly unique.
Environmental sustainability was a priority in the construction of the show, ensuring its development aligned with K’gari’s ecological values:
- Energy-efficient LED lighting powers the entire installation, minimising electrical consumption.
- Hand-mixed concrete was used on-site, avoiding the environmental footprint associated with commercial batching plants and machinery. Concrete was transported using wheelbarrows, eliminating the need for diesel-powered trucks or pumps.
- Structures were lifted by hand, negating the need for heavy cranes and further reducing diesel emissions.
- Locally sourced ironbark timber, milled in South East Queensland, was selected for the platform, cutting down the environmental impact of long-distance transport.
