With the Summer Olympic Games just a month away, Paris is experiencing a dramatic surge in hotel bookings, with occupancy levels nearing an impressive 80%. This surge is revealed by CoStar’s latest Forward STAR data, a testament to the city’s growing allure as the world gears up for this major sporting event.
CoStar, a leading provider of online real estate marketplaces, information, and analytics, reports a significant uptick in hotel occupancy in Paris. In February, booking levels hovered around 50%, gradually increasing to just above 60% in April. As of June 17, occupancy levels are peaking at 77.8% for the night of July 27, which will see 14 gold medal events, and 77.7% for the opening night on July 26. This starkly contrasts the same period last year when booking levels for these nights were at 47.7% and 47.5%, respectively.
Christina Choueifaty, senior account manager at STR, highlights the shifting dynamics in travel patterns. “While the Olympics are expected to bring a surge in leisure travel, there does seem to be a shift in business travel patterns leading up to the games. However, the lower demand we’re seeing for the early summer months can be seen as a temporary adjustment. This dip in travel in the short term is allowing Paris to focus on catering to the massive influx of leisure travelers visiting the market next month. In the long run, the Olympics will further solidify the city’s position as a major tourist destination, potentially attracting even more demand in the future.”
The Olympics’ impact extends beyond Paris to the entire Île-de-France region. Booking levels across the region show a similar pattern, with the highest occupancy on the books at 75.1% for Saturday, August 3, the night of 28 gold medal events. The lowest occupancy in Paris and Île-de-France is on Sunday, August 11, the last night of the competition, at 59.8% and 58.9%, respectively.
These figures underscore the immense draw of the Olympics, as tourists from around the globe flock to Paris. The city’s hospitality sector is poised to benefit significantly, reinforcing its status as a premier travel destination. The influx of tourists boosts hotel bookings and invigorates the local economy, with businesses across various sectors expecting increased activity.
These trends indicate a robust and vibrant market for travellers and investors alike. The current trajectory suggests that Paris will not only enjoy heightened tourism during the Olympics but may also see sustained interest and increased demand. The city’s preparations and investments in infrastructure and services to accommodate the influx of visitors are likely to pay off, cementing its appeal as a global leisure and business travel hub.
