In 2019, Global Travel Media covered the ‘totality’ of an Eclipse alongside over 200 eclipse chasing enthusiasts. Our adventure culminated on the meadow of Harrison Ford’s Ranch outside of Jackson Hole, Wyoming—an unforgettable adventure. While we made our way to the site, surrounded by the Grand Tetons Mountains, we lingered nightly in viewing spots to observe the nighttime skies. This writer assumed I knew a fair bit about sky-gazing…. I was little more than a rookie in this passionate group’s company. We eagerly await the next one…2024 in Texas…here we come!
Meanwhile …Celebrate Under Canvas along the way to your eclipse: The World’s First DarkSky™-Certified Resort.
What is a Certified Dark Sky™ Location?
In a Dark Sky Park, artificial light is minimized, allowing visitors to experience the night sky in a way that is often impossible in urban or suburban areas due to excessive light pollution from artificial lighting. This enables clear views of celestial phenomena like stars, planets, and meteor showers.
Dark skies protect nocturnal wildlife, conserve energy, and maintain human health and well-being. By preserving or restoring natural night-time darkness, Dark Sky Parks contribute to broader environmental goals and offer the public unique educational and recreational opportunities.
Imagine standing under the vast, unpolluted night sky, where the Milky Way stretches across the heavens, and countless stars twinkle like diamonds. Feel the wonder of the universe and connect with nature in a way often lost in our brightly lit cities. Preserving the night sky is more than a stunning view—it’s about protecting the environment. In an exciting stride to conserve this precious resource, Under Canvas Lake Powell – Grand Staircase has been named the first-ever DarkSky-certified resort in the world! It’s not just an achievement—it’s a celebration of innovation, commitment, and blending comfort with nature. Join us as we explore this and why it’s a monumental step.

Participating partners reduce light pollution by following guidance from the International Dark-Sky Association. Like many of the company’s camps near National Parks—including Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, and Grand Canyon, venues are certified as International Dark Sky Parks~ incorporating environmentally responsible outdoor lighting, effective lighting policies, and education to help protect and preserve the night sky.
Leading the Way in Environmental Stewardship.
In collaboration with DarkSky, Under Canvas has crafted the DarkSky Resort certification program, encouraging other hospitality companies to join the fight against light pollution so future generations can enjoy night skies filled with stars and constellations.
Light Pollution: A Growing Concern.
Light pollution is on the rise, increasing by nearly 10% annually. Today, 8 out of 10 people live under a light-polluted sky, affecting our health, wildlife, and climate. Under Canvas is committed to reversing this trend and improving environmental conservation.
