July 2023 saw a spectacular resurgence in international travel involving the United States. The data, recently unveiled by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO), is a testament to the industry’s rebound.
U.S. Welcomes International Visitors with Open Arms.
By July 2023, the number of non-U.S. resident international visitors soared to a staggering 6,465,828. This marks a 24.8% jump compared to figures from the previous year’s month. On a broader perspective, this volume is a significant 84% of the pre-pandemic total of July 2019, showcasing an upward trend from the prior month’s 79%. Notably, overseas visitor numbers also saw a surge of 21.1% since July 2022, emphasizing the twenty-eighth consecutive month of year-over-year increase in total non-U.S. resident international arrivals.
Yet, the travel landscape wasn’t uniform. Of the 20 primary tourist-generating countries, Colombia and Spain experienced declines in visitors by 6.5% and 2.1%, respectively. Countries like Canada, Mexico, the UK, France, and Germany dominated the charts. These powerhouses accounted for a massive 63% of all international arrivals.

July also recorded 10,634,095 U.S. citizens venturing abroad, a substantial 16.5% increment from the prior year. These figures stand tall at 99% of the total outbound travel volume witnessed in pre-pandemic July 2019. With this, July 2023 notched up as the twenty-eighth successive month where the number of U.S. citizens travelling internationally saw a surge year-over-year.
The cumulative figure for U.S. citizen departures up to July 2023 totalled an impressive 57,271,140, marking a 28.4% YOY increase. Mexico remained a favoured destination, recording the most significant volume of visitors, closely followed by destinations like Canada and the Caribbean. Europe, however, emerged as a hot favourite for U.S. outbound visitors, constituting 21.8% of all departures in July.
