Set in the charming Centro Storico neighborhood, Florence’s beloved 38-room boutique Hotel Calimala will ascend to new heights this October 2023 through the acquisition of a neighboring building, adding 65 keys to the hotel. The hotel’s original east-facing structure is housed in a landmark 19th-century Eclectic architecture-style building, while the endeavor will herald the arrival of a magnificent westward building, spanning across five floors with 65 brand-new rooms, each meticulously designed by acclaimed and esteemed architect, Alex Meitlis (of Ottolenghi’s London restaurants). Located just a stone’s throw away from the original Hotel Calimala, the new building will offer guests an unparalleled hospitality experience in the bustling heart of the Italian city, with a chic restaurant and state-of-the-art gym and wellness amenities. The expansion of Hotel Calimala will unveil an extraordinary chapter in the hotel’s legacy, with an oasis of grandeur that will leave an indelible imprint on Florence’s hospitality scene.
Each room in the new wing of Hotel Calimala will maintain the iconic design elements employed in the original, eastern building by Meitlis, ensuring a continuation of the captivating ambiance. Guests can expect plenty of natural light flooding the rooms and throughout the hotel, along with breathtaking views of the historic city. What’s more the rooms will seamlessly blend into the hotel’s contemporary design and the building’s timeless beauty, paying homage to Florence’s rich artistic heritage and incorporating exclusive amenities for the comfort of the discerning traveler.
When it comes to wining and dining, the hotel expansion will include the addition of an stylish restaurant on the ground floor, Meze, which will serve Mediterranean-Italian cuisine-inspired menu from breakfast and aperitivo to dinner.
The new wing of Hotel Calimala will be located on Via dei Lamberti in Florence, just in front of the original hotel structure, on a street steeped in rich historical background that dates back to the 13th century. The charming, cobblestone street was named after the Lamberti, influential nobles and Ghibellines who owned houses and towers in the area, and underwent an impressive redevelopment project as part of the ancient Florentine center’s redevelopment.
The original Hotel Calimala sits on Via Calimala 2, occupying an entire block between Via dei Lamberti and Via Porta Rossa in the historical Palazzo degli Angeli. Offering 38 bright rooms, complete with far-reaching views of the Centro Storico neighborhood, the hotel’s exteriors have been lovingly restored, featuring etched “sgraffito” motifs on its exterior facade, distressed stone walls and original brass accents. The true spirit of Hotel Calimala emerges at ANGEL Roofbar & Dining, the hotel’s experiential rooftop destination, occupying the fifth, sixth & seventh floors of the original hotel, featuring a rooftop patio, floral garden and breathtaking views of the city’s iconic landmarks. Hotel Calimala places guests in the hub of the city’s most historic and noteworthy sites, shopping boutiques, restaurants, theaters and parks.
