As the dawn of supersonic air travel moves ever closer to reality, Boom Supersonic, a pioneer in the field, unveiled significant advances in its sustainable supersonic aircraft, Overture, at the esteemed Paris Air Show. This announcement marks a significant stride in the evolution of sustainable aviation, ushering in an era where supersonic travel is feasible and sustainable.
Boom Supersonic is revving for an aviation revolution with its Symphony™ engine, designed to propel the Overture to over twice the speed of today’s airliners while exclusively running on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This commitment to SAF is a bold testament to Boom’s dedication to sustainable air travel, promising high-speed flights that don’t compromise environmental stewardship.

A critical development in the Overture program is signing structural supplier agreements with aerospace leaders Aernnova, Leonardo, and Aciturri. The involvement of these esteemed companies reflects the calibre of engineering and innovation driving this project. Aernnova is set to design Overture’s wings, Leonardo will helm the fuselage and wing box, while Aciturri will be responsible for the empennage.
Boom Supersonic’s extensive partnership network includes industry giants such as Safran Landing Systems, Eaton, Collins Aerospace, Flight Safety International, FTT, GE Additive, and StandardAero. Collaboration with such a globally-recognized lineup of suppliers attests to the potential and credibility of Boom’s Overture project.
Blake Scholl, founder and CEO of Boom Supersonic, emphasized the progress with Overture and Symphony, applauding the relentless efforts from their global team of partners. According to Scholl, “These advancements operate at an accelerated pace toward the future of sustainable supersonic flight.”
Boom’s commercial order book, swelling with 130 aircraft, includes orders and pre-orders from major airlines such as United, American, and Japan Airlines. Additionally, a defense variant of Overture is developing in collaboration with Northrop Grumman, indicating a broader application for supersonic aircraft.
Boom also offered a comprehensive look into the system’s configuration for Overture. The revealed schematics highlight the ingenuity behind the aircraft, featuring state-of-the-art avionics, flight controls, hydraulics, fuel systems, and landing gear – all fashioned for performance, efficiency, and safety.
A significant leap was made in the Symphony engine program, with Boom and design partner FTT achieving critical milestones in the design and development of Symphony. The engine, optimized for sustainable supersonic flight, boasts a unique 3D-printed ⅓ scale design model, unveiled for the first time at the Paris Air Show. Designed to deliver a 25% increase in time on the wing and a 10% reduction in operating costs, Symphony stands poised to revolutionize sustainable supersonic flight.
In addition to these advancements, Boom announced a bolstered partnership with FTT, identifying Jupiter, Florida, as the site for initial production. Stacey Rock, President of Florida Turbine Technologies, commented on the promising potential of Overture and Symphony, describing them as “transformational for the future of supersonic travel”.
Further progress was reported with Northrop Grumman on the “High-Speed Endo-atmospheric Commercial Vehicle Conceptual Design Study and Technology Roadmaps Development” program. This NASA-contracted study is set to explore and identify technologies to augment the efficiency of commercial supersonic flight, potentially culminating in dramatic strides in emission reduction.
All these remarkable advancements signal a promising future for supersonic air travel. With its innovative partnerships, unwavering commitment to sustainability, and groundbreaking technological developments, Boom Supersonic’s Overture program promises to take us into an unprecedented era of high-speed, sustainable flight. And with this announcement, the horizon of that era grows ever closer.
