CEO Güliz Öztürk stood proudly at the 79th IATA General Assembly on June 6, 2023, delivering a milestone for Pegasus Airlines – they had officially become the world’s highest operationally profitable airline in 2022.
Addressing the assembly, Öztürk detailed the company’s diligent planning, strong performance, and capacity increases that led to exponential growth, overcoming challenging global macroeconomic concerns and local adversities, including a significant earthquake disaster in Türkiye.
Pegasus Airlines, a reputable brand in the aviation industry, saw a successful 2022, marking a significant stride in its journey. Their ability to anticipate and meet the rapid increase in travel demand during the summer played a significant role in this success. A 34% rise in total guests to 26.9 million, a 96% increase in international route passengers, and a revenue boost of 139% to 2.45 billion euros indicated the strong financial backbone supporting Pegasus’s ascent.
“We are ready to embrace the potential rise in travel demand with open arms, and our 2022 performance reflects this commitment,” said Öztürk.
Pegasus’s stellar performance didn’t stop in 2022. The first quarter of 2023 saw a 32% increase in capacity and a 31% rise in guest numbers compared to the previous year, maintaining their upward trajectory despite significant challenges.
As a celebration of the Turkish Republic’s centenary, Pegasus Airlines aims to bolster its fleet to surpass the 100-aircraft milestone in 2023. This ambitious plan entails the delivery of 31 A321neo aircraft between 2023 and 2025. Their ongoing commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion, alongside their digital and fleet transformation initiatives, underscores Pegasus’s determination to achieve sustainable success.
On the sustainability front, Pegasus isn’t pulling any punches. The airline has committed to a net-zero carbon emissions target by 2050 and has initiated a plethora of activities to accomplish this. These include investments in the new-generation fleet and alternative energy sources, waste management, business process transformation, and a unique Export Credit Agency-backed aircraft financing model committed to emission intensity reduction and gender equality.
As part of its sustainable initiatives, Pegasus has also begun to increase its use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) while collaborating with stakeholders for SAF production in Türkiye.
“We are taking bold steps towards a more sustainable future,” said Öztürk while discussing the airline’s strategy.
Pegasus’s ‘Harmony’ initiative, focused on gender equality, is another commendable feather in their cap. As of May 2023, 35% of the company’s employees are women, a statistic that they aim to push even further, in line with IATA’s ’25 in 2025′ targets.
Öztürk concluded her speech with a poignant message about the necessity of action for a sustainable future. The airline has set a strong example by mitigating the flight-related greenhouse gas emissions of all IATA AGM attendees and cargo flying with Pegasus Airlines through SAF.
Through a year of stellar growth, comprehensive plans for expansion, and a solid commitment to sustainability and equality, Pegasus Airlines has proven it’s not just about reaching new heights but also about how you get there.
