California’s wine community is celebrating its 12th annual “Down to Earth” Month in April, highlighting the state’s sustainability efforts in viticulture and winemaking through eco-focused events, tastings, and activities. As Earth Day approaches, the month-long celebration, organized by California Wines, will feature over 30 sustainable wine festivals and activities across the state. California is the fourth-largest global wine-producing region and a leading advocate for sustainable wine growth, with 36 Green Medal-winning wine producers.
Sustainability is a significant focus for the state’s wine industry, with over 80% of the wine made by wineries certified under the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA)’s Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing program. Additionally, more than 60% of statewide winegrape acreage is certified under CSWA or other California sustainability programs such as Fish Friendly Farming, Lodi Rules, Napa Green, and Sustainability in Practice (SIP).
“California has seen a 118% increase in certified sustainable vineyards over the past five years. Our member wineries are recognized worldwide as leaders in sustainability,” said Robert P. Koch, president and CEO of Wine Institute.
To mark Down to Earth Month, wineries and regional associations across the state host various interactive events highlighting sustainability, from wine tastings to eco-focused vineyard tours. These events aim to provide consumers with the latest information and engaging experiences around California’s premier sustainability efforts.
For instance, on April 1, the annual Lodi Wine Festival will take place, featuring up to 40 wineries, many of which are certified through the Lodi Rules sustainable winegrowing program. On April 22-23, the El Dorado Passport to the Great Out There event will provide visitors access to over 20 participating wineries across El Dorado County, many of which are committed to sustainable growing and winemaking practices.
The Wines of the Santa Cruz Mountains Grand Tasting event will take place on April 30, featuring over 40 Santa Cruz Mountains vintners showcasing sustainably produced wines. Meanwhile, the California Wine Festival, which will be held on April 14-15, will allow visitors to sample selections from dozens of California wineries, including many certified sustainable ones.
In summary, “Down to Earth” Month is an excellent opportunity for visitors and locals to explore California’s sustainability efforts in the wine industry. The state’s wineries are at the forefront of sustainable viticulture and winemaking. The events and activities throughout April provide an opportunity to celebrate this commitment to environmental stewardship, social equity, and community engagement.
