London is a city full of endless opportunities for entertainment, culture, and fun, and 2023 is no exception. With so many events and festivities taking place, London has been named one of 2023’s top destinations of the year. From the King’s Coronation to festivals, new hotel openings, and exhibit openings, there is something for everyone in London this year.
The King’s Coronation: A Weekend Full of Festivities
One of the biggest events of the year will be the King’s Coronation, taking place from May 6-8. King Charles III will ascend to the throne, marking the first coronation since 1953. The celebrations will begin with “The King’s Procession” to Westminster Abbey, where every coronation has taken place since 1066. Visitors can also enjoy pop-up screenings in central London, including the screening at Grosvenor Square, Mayfair, which will include a Secret Garden Party that will run all weekend long, with food and drink aplenty, and is free to enter.
The following day, the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle will be broadcast live on the BBC. While concertgoers will be treated to a medley of the UK’s top musical talent, iconic sites around London will be illuminated in an impressive display dubbed “Lighting up the Nation”, dazzling onlookers around the city. Sunday will also see a series of street parties hosted in London and towns and cities across the United Kingdom. Known as “The Coronation Big Lunch”, Brits are being encouraged to share food and fun together with their neighbours and community members.
Throughout the coronation weekend, restaurants and shops across the city will be running one-of-a-kind royal offers, such as Hummingbird Bakery and the Grand Saloon Afternoon Tea at The Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Bars and restaurants will be permitted to stay open two hours later than usual, allowing visitors and Londoners to make the most of the celebratory weekend.
Exhibitions and Museums: A Haven for Culture Vultures
London is a haven for culture vultures, and this year is no different. There are numerous installations and special art exhibitions focused on royals, including Style & Society: Dressing the Georgians at the Queen’s Gallery and Crown to Couture at Kensington Palace, which will be open to the public until October.
The Victoria & Albert Museum will open DIVA (June 24, 2023) which will celebrate the power and creativity of iconic performers, exploring and redefining the role of ‘diva’ as well as Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel. Fashion Manifesto (September 16, 2023) will be the first UK exhibition dedicated to the work of French couturière, Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, charting the establishment of the House of CHANEL.
On the other side of town, the Tate Modern will exhibit Capturing the Moment (June 14, 2023), inviting visitors to discover the dynamic relationship between contemporary painting and photography, and the British Museum’s Luxury to Power: Persia to Greece (May 4, 2023) will explore the complex story of how luxuries shaped the political landscape of Europe and Asia.
The Stage: An Abundance of New Shows
London’s theatre scene is always buzzing, and this year is no exception. New shows debuting this year include Bonnie & Clyde at the Garrick Theatre, Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons at the Harold Pinter Theatre, Mrs Doubtfire at the Shaftesbury Theatre, Oklahoma! at the Wyndham’s Theatre, Operation Mincemeat, The Musical, at the Fortune Theatre.
