Aussies are heading overseas in droves this year. Nearly 4 in 5 Aussies (79%) are planning to travel internationally in 2023.
When asked what international trips they were planning in 2023, many are planning multiple trips; 40% of Australians are planning a family trip in 2023, 29% are planning a trip with a significant other, 17% are planning to travel solo this year, 14% are planning to travel with a group of friends and 8% are planning to travel for business.
When asked what’s most important when booking a plane ticket, 29% of travellers say that flexibility to adjust a booking is most important, 28% want a refundable ticket, 16% want baggage included in the fare, 10% want to pre-select their seats and 7% say having in-flight meals included in the fare is most important.
Showcasing how important flexibility is, 19% of Aussie travellers had to cancel their flight in 2022
The main reason for cancelling a flight in 2022 was because of contracting COVID-19, followed by a change in plans.
New ABS Data
This week the ABS has revealed that in December 2022 alone, 32,100 Aussie residents travelled to Fiji for a holiday, an increase from 30,750 the previous month. According to the ABS, Fiji is the 6th most popular travel destination for Australians and the average length of stay in Fiji is 6-10 days. Fiji Airways states that it is responsible for transporting over 70% of international arrivals.
ABS revealed, “Fiji was the highest of the top ten destination countries when compared to 2019, with 2022 trips reaching 92% of 2019 levels. The number of Australians visiting Fiji increased over the year, and by December 2022 had reached 119% of the same period in 2019”

Fiji Airways introduces increased flexibility for economy passengers with the launch of a new ‘Fly Your Way’ fare concept.
Over half of Australians (57%) say flexibility to adjust or to cancel their ticket is most important to them when travelling, with 19% having to cancel a flight last year according to new research commissioned by Fiji Airways, who today announced that it is revamping its fare concept to help offer guests more choice and flexibility.
The consumer research, commissioned by Fiji’s national airline, surveyed over 500 Australians and revealed that nearly 4 in 5 Aussies (79%) are planning to travel internationally this year and they want versatility.
When asked what’s most important when booking a plane ticket, 29% of Australian travellers want flexibility to adjust a booking and 28% want a refundable ticket. Having checked baggage included in the fare is most important to 16% of travellers and 10% think it’s most important to be able to to pre-select their seats.
In response to flexibility becoming increasingly important to travellers, Fiji Airways is introducing a new fares concept for economy passengers, where guests can customise how they travel based on their needs. The new ‘Fly Your Way’ branded fares concept provides four categories including Lite, Value, Comfort, and Plus, which include varying degrees of flexibility and offerings.
Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO, Andre Viljoen, says “Our research revealed that having the flexibility to adjust and refund airline tickets is the most important factor for Aussie travellers right now and with our new ‘Fly Your Way’ fare options guests have the option to book increased flexibility when flying with Fiji Airways.”

Solo travel is in the pipeline for 17% of Aussies and 8% are planning to travel for business.
