The Majorca’s governing body, the Consell de Majorca, has launched the “Green Film Shooting Plan” plan to enable green credentials for filming on the island. The government has allocated €2,150,000 to the audiovisual sector to encourage sustainable film production practices. The sector is an important industry for the island which has become the backdrop to many international productions including “The Night Manager”, “Me Before You”, “The Majorca Files” and most recently “The Crown”. The initiative will also support and finance companies in acquiring and incorporating sustainable technology. The two year project (2022-2024), which is funded by the European Union Next Generation funds, will facilitate the transition towards more sustainable models of work and service provision.
The project also advocates the reduction of waste through the circular economy and a greater respect for the environment.
The president of the Consell de Majorca, Catalina Cladera, commented, “the audiovisual sector of Majorca is strategic and fundamental in our transition to carbon neutrality. For this reason, the “Green Film Shooting Plan” is one of our most important European funded projects and will be a benchmark in audiovisual production. Through this initiative, we align ourselves with Europe and show that Majorca is not only an island of cinema, but is also a leader in sustainability and circular economy projects”.
Councilor Andreu Serra added, “we want all filming done in Majorca from now on to be more respectful of the environment, sustainable and participate in the circular economy, which we are promoting in all other industries.”
The “Green Film Shooting Plan” will help companies use renewable energy and electric or hybrid vehicles, eliminate plastic in the water supply, treate organic waste in catering services, and use local food sources.
The project will also pay special attention to training, so that all audiovisual professionals and companies in Mallorca can learn the techniques and processes of this new way of working. The purpose is for any producer who decides to shoot in Majorca to be able to guarantee that they will meet the sustainable filming conditions that are being implemented in Europe and the rest of the world.
A third aspect of the initiative is offsetting the carbon footprint produced by the professionals and teams that travel to Majorca for filming. On one hand, the hiring of local artists, professionals and technicians will be endorsed, but for the journeys that cannot be avoided, Majorca’s Film Food Forest project will be promoted. This project encourages the consumption of “zero-kilometer” fruit and vegetables in catering thus reducing the carbon footprint of productions.
Support for the audiovisual sector
The Consell de Majorca, through the Majorca Film Commission, has shown continuous and growing support for the audiovisual sector. The island’s commission is a committed promoter of the Majorcan audiovisual sector, assisting producers and their projects at all stages of production, from the creative process to the moment of distribution.
The audiovisual sector is a strategic choice for three reasons. Firstly, it is an important cultural activity. Secondly, it creates jobs, contributes to the local economy through diversification and deseasonalisation, and consolidates an industrial sector in full development. Finally, it also plays an important role in tourism promotion and in making the iconic sights and warm atmosphere of Majorca known. It serves as a showcase to present the island to the world.
The island has already become the backdrop to numerous films and advertisements which take audiences on a tour of some of its most stunning areas. Cinephiles can find out about the films shot in Majorca through the Movie Map which all gives details of five tours exploring Majorca through film locations.
