Polar and Latin America specialists Chimu Adventures have identified their most popular destinations that Australians are booking this summer to shake off the pandemic blues.
Travel is back, consumer confidence is returning, and the world is once again open. After almost two years of border closures, Australians are going big —the 2022 Global Travel Trends Report, by American Express, found that now is the time travellers want to book their dream destination—over 60% of respondents would rather book a big holiday than buy a new car, the report finds.
Domestic road trips and visits to family and friends, both locally and overseas, have been on trend to date, but now that families have been reunited, travellers are looking ahead to what’s next. According to Chimu’s forward bookings, Australians are, once again, planning leisure holidays and utilising their savings to tick off bucket list destinations. This coming summer has been deemed the perfect time for travellers to escape, unwind, and make up for lost time, as indicated by robust forward bookings.
Here are the five most popular destinations for this summer, according to Chimu Adventures.
1. Antarctica
Antarctica has no doubt been Chimu’s number one selling destination, with Australians determined to make their dreams come true by visiting the white continent. After the pandemic, travellers are opting for longer itineraries, preferring to book more in-depth cruises, visiting the Antarctica Peninsula, South Georgia and the Falklands, and skipping the shorter journeys.
“It would appear that travellers have been banking their holiday funds in anticipation for the return of travel and are now indulging in twice the trip they would have done originally, it seems they feel as if they deserve something special, and immersive and experiential cruises, like those on the Ocean Endeavour, with more time on land and more adventure opportunities when in Antarctica, have been the most in-demand style”, explained Chad Carey, Chimu Managing Director.
Luxury itineraries on the mainland have also been popular with affluent travellers, opting to fly from South Africa to a private camp where numerous bespoke adventure opportunities exist, such as visiting Emperor penguin colonies or visiting the South Pole.
For those not yet willing to leave the Antipodes, scenic flights over Antarctica and cruises departing New Zealand for Antarctica and the Sub Antarctic Islands have been snapped up by bucket-listers.
“One of our most popular scenic flights is the South Pole flight, departing in November. It will be a world-first for tourists, visiting the South Pole from Australia in a day,” said Carey.

2. Carnival in Brazil
Enjoying freedom by letting their hair down at the world’s biggest party – Rio Carnival – has been deemed the perfect way to celebrate the return to overseas leisure travel for many Chimu clients. Travellers are, once again, booking up tickets to witness the flamboyant displays put on by the locals at the Sambadrome, accompanied by visits to the many local sites in and around Rio. With summer being the best time to visit Rio to enjoy the beaches, vibrant atmosphere, and all the famous tourist attractions, it makes for the perfect visit to Brazil.

3. Galapagos Islands
Cruises around the Galapagos Islands are, once again, hot travel property. Travellers are returning to one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, making them feel like they have stepped into one of the David Attenborough documentaries that entertained them during the pandemic.
Many cruises are once again operating and the summer months are ideal for snorkelling, boating, and hiking, providing plenty of opportunities to observe the famous Galapagos tortoises, plus sea lions, albatross, iguanas, and much more.

4. Buenos Aires and Rio
Exciting culture, rich in tango, wine, and food, travellers are excited to enjoy these two famous cities, including a visit to Iguazu Falls and the Tigre Delta en route. Creating the ultimate culture and wilderness combination, many travellers are booking this Signature journey up as a pre or post-Antarctic trip or attaching it to their Rio Carnival package. Travellers are offered the choice of standard, superior and deluxe styles of accommodation and, so far, superior is the most popular option.

5. Patagonia
Summer is the best season to visit Patagonia, as all the hiking trails are open, Torres del Paine is in full glory, the weather is temperate, and sightseeing in places like Cape Horn, Tierra del Fuego, and Glacier Alley is at its best. Whether hiking or relaxing onboard a Patagonian cruise, travellers can delight in the warm Chilean sun and long summer days.
Due to Patagonia’s southern location, it’s also easy to combine a trip to Patagonia with an Antarctic cruise.
