Now in its 12th year, Vivid Sydney will transform the Harbour City into an illuminating fusion of creativity, innovation and technology from Friday 27 May to Saturday 18 June, with more than 200+ events celebrating the essence of Sydney’s soul including its diversity, beauty, resilience, First Nations culture, and vibrant creative community.

Audible’s intimate series will explore how taste has defined human civilisation, the stigma around aging for women and empowering advice for women at any stage of life, and a behind-the-scenes look at the bizarre online world of ASMR and the shady underbelly of competitive chilli eating.

On 1 June, cook, writer and TV presenter, Adam Liaw, will analyse his upcoming Audible Original podcast, How Taste Changed the World, set to release on 10 May. Adam will discuss how the science and history of our five tastes – salt, sweet, sour, bitter and umami – have defined human civilisation.

During the talk, Adam will discuss how our taste for salt is vital to our biology, and how it turned food into a commodity; underpinning global economics for thousands of years. He will explore how sweetness once guided our evolutionary forebears to energy-rich fruits; now used to sell soft drinks.

The talk will also uncover how our biology is the key to why we like red wine with steak or tea with dumplings. Adam will call upon the interviews he conducted during the documentary-style podcast series to discuss how our taste buds have shaped the world including building empires, starting wars, establishing democracy and creating financial systems.

On 8 June, treasured journalist, TV presenter, radio host and author, Melissa Doyle, will examine her Audible Original podcast, Age Against the Machine, where after turning 50, Melissa found herself wanting some guidance on how to approach life’s second act.

Throughout the talk, Melissa will discuss the stigma of becoming a mature woman and how ageing can differ between countries and cultures. Melissa will draw on the various interviews she undertook with women from different cultures to understand how growing older can mean forging deeper connections (New Zealand), earning more power (Ghana), more opportunities (Finland) and sometimes more plastic surgery (South Korea).

The talk will also explore a variety of topics surrounding dating, financial security, and job opportunities for older women. Melissa will also share advice on how women can make the second half of their lives empowering, with a how-to guide to Age Against the Machine.

Finally, on 15 June, journalist, interviewer, author and documentary maker, Marc Fennell, and writer and TV producer, Laura Nagy, will welcome guests into a world of weird and wonderful cultural moments and movements. They will unpack their Audible Original podcasts, It BurnsNut Jobs and Pillow Talk, which cover topics such as the dark underbelly of competitive chilli eating, and how the bizarre online world of ASMR isn’t all erotic!

Across the Audible Live series, each speaker will discuss the unique creative benefits of working in audio and the innovative ways to tell diverse and powerful stories within the format. Held at the University of Technology Sydney’s Great Hall, attendees will have the opportunity to dig deeper through an audience Q&A, with a meet-and-greet to follow.

Leanne Cartwright-Bradford, Head of Audible APAC Operations, said: “We are thrilled to be part of Vivid Sydney’s Ideas Exchange for the first time, to spark creativity, curiosity and new ideas through audio storytelling. Scripting and creating stories to be heard offers a unique opportunity for intriguing and often surprising listening experiences, and our Audible Originals creators are the innovators and thought-provokers perfectly placed to inspire new ways of thinking.”
