Australia has had one of the strictest lockdown restrictions in the world. In order to protect citizens from the high rate of transmission of the coronavirus, the Scott Morrison government had closed down Australian borders in March 2020.
However, now the new dawn is finally at the doorsteps of Australia, waiting to enter the economy as soon as the gates re-open.
On February 7, 2022, Prime Minister Scott Morrisson had a National Security Cabinet meeting. After the meeting, the prime minister announced that Australia is going to re-open its international borders on February 21.
This comes as a great piece of news as Australia has had one of the strictest COVID-19 restrictions in the world. After almost two years of borders closure, now, international visa holders would be welcomed in the country.

The decision comes as a follow-up after the country discarded the long-standing “COVID-zero” policy. Although, Australia had started reopening its borders under the air travel bubble system with a few countries like New Zealand. But, from February 21 onwards, all the tourists, workers and students will be welcomed in the country.
Morrison in his announcement also emphasised vaccination. Fully vaccinated travellers are duly welcomed in the country. Travellers, who have medical exemptions to vaccines would be required to submit their proof of exemptions and hotel quarantine once they are on Australian land.

During the pandemic and because of strict lockdown rules, the country has gone through significant socio-economic losses. Australia’s tourism industry has majorly suffered because of the country’s strict restrictions during the pandemic. Thousands of international students couldn’t return for their education. Additionally, hundreds of families were torn apart.
However, with the final ease in the border restrictions, Australia will again have the dawn of economic and social prosperity. Most countries around the world have fully reopened their borders except for a few like China, Japan and New Zealand.
