The global tourism industry is desperately seeking recovery. Thousands of unemployed are hopeful of filling their pockets again. But, unfortunately, recovery in 2021 seems like a far-fetched dream for most countries. However, one country is not following the herd and seems to be doing relatively better.

Spain has astonished the world with its remarkable recovery of tourism in 2021. And more surprising is it’s not even the country that had the minimum number of COVID-19 cases in 2020. Thus, something exciting has happened; some new inspiration for the world tourism industry has gotten into the limelight.

Spain’s tourism reaching heights in 2021

Spain’s tourism industry is flourishing again. International tourism has returned to pre-pandemic levels. In 2021, there has been a 78.3% increase in the number of international tourists. Additionally, 4.4 million international arrivals were registered in July.

According to the data published by the Spanish Statistics Institute, mostly international tourists have come from France, Germany and the UK. However, the tourism industry has not picked up entirely because of international tourism.

Unfortunately, international spending in Spain has declined to €11.5 million in July compared to €28.3 million reported in the same period in 2019, reports the Spanish Statistics Institute.

Domestic tourism has played a significant role in pushing the industry towards reaching new heights. It has surged with 5.8 million domestic tourists, which is more than the domestic tourists accounting for 5.7 million in 2019.

The pool of advantages

Spain’s tourism sector is far ahead in its journey towards revival. The belief in tourism is the primary factor that drives recovery. Some Spanish hoteliers said their hotels have performed well in summer 2021, and some have even done better than in 2019. Spain experienced the peak in international booking in July.

How can Australia take inspiration from Spain?

Spain has had more than 80,000 deaths and more than four million COVID-19 positive cases till now. So, how has the country got back on its feet so quickly? The tourism industry’s revival is because of countrywide mass vaccination.

The state authorities put robust vaccination their topmost priority, and now more than 88% of Spain’s population is vaccinated with the first dose of the vaccine and more than 78% are fully vaccinated.

Australia is planning the same: state officials said before that they are planning to carry mass vaccination drives for maximum people to get their COVID-19 jabs before Christmas.

However, with the rise of Delta variant and subsequent lockdowns, the authorities need to look into the matter as to why cases are rising again in the country even though it performed so well during the first wave of the virus.

It is crystal-clear that Australia needs to learn from Spain as to how to perform robust vaccination. The belief in vaccination is of utmost importance. Because until people don’t trust the vaccine, Australia cannot save its struggling tourism industry.
