Ever wondered why Darwin’s theory of adaptation fit like a glove to any given situation, reflecting not only the instincts for survival of some biotic species but an approach that runs the show in any sphere?

Perhaps this is why several corporations that failed to innovate have faded in the sands of time. They indicate that continuous change is necessary to remain in the race.

To that end, humans have always been an endorser for adaption, spinning latest invention while simultaneously transforming the way of life. However, unlike the candid choice of embracing life-enhancing amenities, the COVID-19 shoved sudden challenging changes that could have veered off the industries like the travel sector had they not incorporated dynamic absorption mechanism.

The travel sector underwent a radical transformation phase- a short-lived yet impactful one that stimulated at least a decade worth of change in a matter of months. The evident ones included extensive travel protocols, radical technology adoption and reduced touchpoints. Meanwhile, less obvious psychological and behavioural shifts among tourists prove to be precursors for long-term transformations in the travel sector.

Let us look at some changes in travel behaviour underpinning the tourism sector’s major remodelling-

Travel Within Smaller Groups

While old habits die hard, the ones inculcated out of desperation are even harder to shirk off. Social distancing measures continue to remain the ‘new normal’ despite the mass rollout of vaccination programs globally. Solo trips are gaining grounds as the reclusive drive zooms in after months of household engagement.

For health and safety purposes, bookings are tipped towards small groups such as family or close friends, as people migrate away from the ‘more the merrier style of travel. It allows them to maintain a safe distance and reduce the probability of getting infected in the current pandemic scenario. On the downside, it could overall increase the travel expense.

Less Intimate Transportation Preferences

Health safety and cleaning standards are equally crucial for transportation as that for hotels and lodging facilities. However, public transit often falls wide off the market when it comes to keeping risk-free distance.

The fear of crowd infections led commuters to switch to private modes of transportation as subway, and other similar channels were referred to as the plausible cause of infection. Although personal vehicles are not an option in foreign lands, rental cars appear a much safer choice for tourists compared to the large, crowded road cruisers. The takeoff of camping culture amidst the safe distance requisites is also causing a spike in caravan bookings in many parts of the globe. It highlights how some trends are getting into the mainstream.

Bookings With Shorter Lead Time

One thing that can be equally dangerous to travel as border restrictions is the uncertainty surrounding travel setting. A sudden spike in cases, impromptu border closures and the government’s hazy stance towards reopening international tourism has kept the vagabond spirit of tourist enthusiasts in check.

In the current ambiguous scenario, travellers prefer to make bookings within a week or fortnight of departure instead of a lengthy time frame. As per the figures from International Air Travel Association (IATA), 40% of the current tickets are booked within a week of travel as opposed to 50% of tickets booked at least three weeks before the journey date in the pre-pandemic scenario.

While the business customers making bookings at closer dates have always served as cash cows for airline companies, similar trends getting prevalent in the leisure setting could mark an onset of major revamp in the tourism reservation settings.

Flexibility Of Making Last-Moment Changes

Uncertain times are the current reality. The airlines and tourism providers recently have been open to the last-minute changes brought due to a spike in the COVID-19 cases or government restrictions. While many companies provide refunds, others allow shifting the bookings to a later date in a bid to overcome customers’ reluctance.

The recent booking flexibility is a more customer-centric approach necessary to woo potential travellers amidst the competitive global settings.
