If you ask trend researchers, they are convinced that our actions, now and in the future, will be guided by a move towards greater sustainability.

Unfortunately, the term is often used with negative connotations today.

We hear it 1000 times a day and an impression has been created that it is mainly used by marketers and politicians. The term was coined by Carl von Carlowitz, a Prussian chief mining officer in 1713 in his work “Sylviculture Oeconomica”. His simple and reasonable demand was that only as much timber as can be grown back should be felled. Unfortunately, man does not adhere to this simple formula. We consume more resources than can naturally replenish themselves. The 20th of August 2020 was Earth Overshoot Day, or “Earth Overload Day”. It marks the day when the demand exceeds the supply of our Earth’s resources.

Hotels and restaurateurs are particularly challenged to make their businesses more sustainable. Travel and overnight stays in hotels cause high CO2 emissions and the tourism industry is therefore a significant driver of greenhouse gas emissions. But travelers also need to rethink their behavior. Together we can help to better protect the environment and fulfill our responsibilities to countries we visit and their inhabitants. The keyword is holistic action, making holidays an experience while protecting the environment and acting locally and regionally.

The Green Pearls® Hoteliers are united by the intrinsic motivation to take responsibility for more environmental protection and social responsibility and to take guests on this journey with them. Here we showcase some examples of sustainable hotels that live up to this responsibility for the environment and people daily.
