Flight Centre - Corporate Traveller - logoIn an era marked by a notable 27% increase in business travel spending across Australia, the contemporary business traveller has evolved into a discerning consumer of hotel services. Amid rising costs, with hotel room rates in Australia climbing to an average of AUD$250 in 2023 and predicted to increase further, the demand for value alongside comfort, productivity, and wellness facilities is reshaping hotel offerings.

A groundbreaking survey conducted by Corporate Traveller, a leading Flight Centre Travel Group division, sheds light on this evolving landscape. Engaging 1,001 nationally representative Australian business travellers, the study highlights a compelling shift towards hotels providing an ‘office away from the office’ experience, marrying functional business amenities with relaxation and health facilities.

The modern business traveller’s wishlist is topped by high-speed, complimentary Wi-Fi, desired by 73% of respondents, followed by robust demands for enhanced workspace utilities within their rooms. Approximately 41% of travellers call for complimentary printing services, and about 35% seek spacious, better-equipped workspaces featuring essentials such as phone chargers and ample electrical outlets.

Interestingly, only a fraction of the respondents (21%) showed interest in communal business centres or separate meeting rooms, underscoring a preference for privacy and the convenience of in-room amenities. This inclination supports the notion that solitude and the ability to work without interruption are valued above traditional corporate facilities.

Health and wellness have also emerged as paramount, with 44% of business travellers emphasizing the need for healthier breakfast options and 36% advocating for relaxation amenities outside of their typical working spaces. These preferences indicate a shift towards a more holistic approach to business travel, where maintaining physical and mental well-being is as critical as professional productivity.

Tom Walley, the Global Managing Director of Corporate Traveller based in Australia, articulates this shift, “Today’s business travellers are not just looking for a place to stay; they seek a sanctuary that enhances both their work efficiency and their personal well-being. This dual focus is becoming a critical differentiator for hotels in a competitive market.”

Essential Amenities for Business Travellers in 2024.

As hotels adapt to these demands, the industry stands on the brink of a transformative era. Facilities integrate superior business amenities seamlessly with wellness-focused environments and are poised to attract modern business travellers who value efficiency and well-being equally.

The survey’s findings are a call to action for the hospitality industry, highlighting the need for innovative approaches to meet the sophisticated demands of today’s business travellers. As we move into 2024, hotels’ ability to serve as both a professional workspace and a personal retreat will likely define their success in attracting discerning business clientele.
