We’re always counting down the days to our next big holiday around the world, but our next trip can be just around the corner. This August, as many of us celebrate National/Independence Day, we also have the luxury of a long weekend – be sure to seize the opportunity for a quick getaway! Here are some nearby spots you can check out to experience a change of scenery, and unwind from your daily grind:
1.Sydney
People often mistake Sydney for the capital of Australia – it’s actually Canberra – but can they really be blamed? With its effervescent cityscape and iconic Opera House, Sydney is one of most lively and entertaining cities you could head to for a quick getaway. Aside from making your rounds around the usual attractions, also take this chance to drop by the Sydney Science Festival, taking place from 6 – 18 August. This extravaganza celebrates the beauty of science through various exhibits and speaking events, and will be held across venues such as the Australian Museum and the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences. Who says science can’t be fun?
Strategically located beside the iconic Darling Harbour and the up-and-coming cultural hub of Barangaroo, West Hotel Sydney, Curio Collection by Hilton offers easy access to the most popular spots in the city. The hotel is distinctively independent in character, and in line with their support for the arts, is currently hosting its winter ‘artist-in-residence’ program. In collaboration with West Hotel Sydney, Aaron Favaloro, one of Australia’s rising fashion illustrators, has created exclusive artworks on display at the hotel. To top it off, each hotel guest will also be gifted with one of his limited-edition postcards – don’t miss out!
2.Bali
It’s time to hit the beach! If you’re trying to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, look no further than Bali. There are many distinct spots on the island, each with their own unique characteristics, but for those who are seeking some peace and quiet, Nusa Dua is the sanctuary for you. Be it soaking up some Vitamin D on the pristine beaches, or getting up and close with forces of nature at the famous Water Blow, some time in the sun will certainly do you good.
Expect nothing but warm Balinese hospitality as you settle in at Hilton Bali, and dig into your favorite local cuisine at Grain restaurant. As part of their Independence Day celebrations, they are offering a special Indonesian Buffet Dinner – this will pay tribute to traditional Indonesian delights, and include signature dishes from different parts of the country.
This themed buffet is available on 17 August, Saturday, from 6.30pm – 9.30pm at IDR 555,000 per person.
3.Bangkok
There’s no doubt that Bangkok is everyone’s favorite spot for a quick weekend getaway, and for good reason. With every turn of the bend, you’ll find interesting shops and culinary delights – so be ready to shop and eat until you drop! One of the up-and-coming spots is the Rot Fai Market Ratchada, a branch-off from the original Rot Fai Market. While slightly smaller, it’s located much closer to central Bangkok, and still offers an authentic bazaar experience with its array of sumptuous street snacks, local fashion and array of vintage collectables.
Rot Fai Market Ratchada is open from 5pm – midnight from Thursday – Sunday. It can be accessed via the National Cultural Centre station on the MRT line.
Conrad Bangkok, situated within a stone’s throw of Bangkok’s commercial district and Ploen Chit BTS station, offers easy access to wherever you want to be. Aside from its convenient location, the hotel also guarantees luxury and comfort at its best – its rooms and amenities have recently been refurbished, so you can hang back and relax in style.
4.Penang
Penang truly offers the best of both worlds; not only is it considered one of the best beach destinations in the world – take your pick from the likes of Batu Ferringhi, Tanjong Bungah or Monkey Beach – but it also offers the thrill of bustling streets and vibrant culture at the city center. The historic district of Georgetown, also a UNESCO heritage-listed site, is decked out with colorful murals that depict local life and landscape. As you embark on your very own mural-hunt along these narrow alleys, don’t miss out on the street stalls serving up a taste of local Penang at its finest.
Nestled in the tranquil stretch of Batu Ferringhi, DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Penang is the perfect getaway spot for friends and family alike. Start your stay with the signature DoubleTree by Hilton warm cookie welcome, before you check out Malaysia’s first teddy bear-themed museum, TeddyVille, featuring minibears in miniature Penang attractions. After a day of fun out in the sun, feast at Makan Kitchen, the all-day dining restaurant. Their A Taste of Middle East & Asia, offers a Middle-Eastern inspired menu, complementing their usual Malaysian spread. Dig your teeth into grilled meat, buttery rice, and a medley of dishes such as Kebab, Hummus, Shish Tawook, and many more.
This themed buffet is available every Friday from 6.30pm – 10.30pm at RM109 for adults, and RM54.50 for children.
5.Singapore
This year, Singapore is not only celebrating its 54th birthday, but also commemorating its bicentennial! To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the city state’s modern founding, plenty of activities have been planned the whole year around. Head on down to Fort Canning to check out the outdoor playground, as well as The Bicentennial Experience, an immersive, multimedia exhibit that highlights key moments in Singapore’s history. You’ll definitely see Singapore with a whole new lens after!
Alongside the National Day celebrations, Hilton Singapore is offering an elaborate showcase of artisanal Singapore-inspired dessert at their D9 Saturday High Tea Buffet. On top of the wide spread of over 40 local favorites and international delights, which span seven live stations, their impressive array of desserts is elevated to the next level with an exclusive collection of Singapore-inspired treats. Sink your teeth into the Singapore Sling gâteaux, soya bean curd tart, salted egg yolk and red bean coconut macarons, and more!
The D9 Saturday High Tea Buffet is available every Saturday from noon to 3pm at SGD48 for adults, and SGD24 for children.
