The airplane route that connects the two largest cities of Brazil is the second busiest in the Americas. It’s what a study recently released by the English website Routesonline showed. In 2018, 3.9 million passengers travelled between Rio de Janeiro, largest coastal city of the country, and São Paulo, Brazil’s largest metropolis. The connection between Mexico City, the Mexican capital, and tourist destination Cancun, in the Caribbean, leads the ranking. The 86 daily flights took 4.87 million passengers in 12 months.

The survey, developed by Sabre Market Intelligence institute, also highlights among the five busiest routs domestic routes between Bogotá and Medellin, in Colombia, with 3.89 million passengers; between Los Angeles and San Francisco, in the US, with 3.66 million passengers; and between Los Angeles and New York, with 3.60 million passengers.

In Brazil, the airline network is expected to grow in 2019. That includes both domestic and international flights. Data provided by the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) shows that in January alone the number of international flights arriving increased by 7% in comparison to the same period last year. Overall, 6,120 flights landed in Brazilian airports during the first month of the year. Which corresponds to approximately 400 more flights. In the city of Rio de Janeiro, the second largest international airport of the country recorded a growth of 9%.
