In a groundbreaking move, the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) has teamed up with The Business of Events to unveil the Global Advocacy Alliance. This initiative marks a strategic endeavour to magnify the voice of the event sector across governmental levels, ensuring its essential role in global development is recognized and supported.
The alliance, scheduled to debut at the ICCA Plenary during IMEX Frankfurt on May 13, 2024, aims to bring together over 200 distinguished industry leaders. This gathering will foster dialogue and share strategies to champion the event sector’s interests with governmental entities.
The session, powered by Gevme, will offer invaluable insights from various industry experts, including political figures, destination marketers, consortiums, convention bureaus, and venue operators. This diverse panel will enrich discussions and offer a holistic view of the sector’s challenges and opportunities.
The core mission of the ICCA Global Advocacy Alliance is to empower participants with actionable knowledge and tools to advocate effectively for the event industry. This advocacy will spur sector growth and enhance its standing within communities’ economic, social, and cultural frameworks.
Empowering Economic and Cultural Narratives
Central to the alliance’s objectives is educating stakeholders on the critical role of advocacy. This includes underscoring the economic benefits of business events, which span revenue generation, job creation, and substantial support for local enterprises. Moreover, the alliance will showcase various case studies that highlight the significant economic contributions of these events.
Social and cultural impacts are also a focal point. The initiative will illustrate how business events foster community development, support local causes, and enhance residents’ life quality. Furthermore, these gatherings serve as vital platforms for celebrating and promoting cultural heritage, encouraging cross-cultural exchange and understanding.
Enhancing Corporate and Government Engagement
Another key aspect of the alliance’s work is refining corporate engagement strategies. Businesses can achieve unparalleled audience engagement and brand visibility by leveraging events as dynamic communication and marketing tools.
Additionally, the alliance will guide navigating governmental relations, transcending traditional lobbying by advocating for supportive policies and initiatives. This will include promoting business events as trade, investment, and global perception drivers, ultimately enhancing destinations’ soft power.
Toolkit Development and Stakeholder Empowerment
The culmination of these efforts will be the creation of a comprehensive toolkit designed to support stakeholders in their advocacy efforts. This toolkit will equip convention bureaus and other industry players with the templates and tools to engage with policymakers effectively.
ICCA CEO Senthil Gopinath emphasizes the alliance’s strategic importance: “The Global Advocacy Alliance is integral to ICCA’s commitment to strengthening advocacy. We’re excited to equip our members with the skills needed to effectively communicate with key stakeholders, driving the collective progress of our industry.”
Martin Fullard, Director of The Business of Events, who will chair the inaugural event, adds, “Addressing advocacy challenges head-on is crucial for our industry. This alliance is a proactive step towards uniting industry leaders, sharing best practices, and developing a universal advocacy toolkit.”
