Federal Support Urged for Rex Airlines Travel Impact. The Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA) calls on the Federal Government to ensure that any support package for Rex Airlines includes compensation for the broader travel ecosystem. With Rex Airlines entering voluntary administration, many travel agents are left with significant outstanding amounts owed by the airline while also striving to assist affected Australian travellers.

In a formal letter to Federal Transport Minister Catherine King, ATIA has requested financial support for its members. ATIA CEO Dean Long emphasized the necessity of extending financial aid beyond the airline to the entire travel ecosystem, which is now burdened with additional work supporting stranded travellers and those with future bookings.

“Given the current situation, we urge the Federal Government to extend any financial support beyond the airline itself to include the wider travel ecosystem, which is now picking up the pieces. Many travel agents have been left with substantial outstanding amounts as a result of booking with Rex Airlines for clients. On top of the financial exposure is the significant increase in workload as they work to help those who have now found themselves stuck and those who have booked with Rex for future travel,” stated Long.

He further explained that financial assistance is crucial to help travel businesses manage this difficult period. A recent meeting with Minister King highlighted her understanding of the travel ecosystem’s functioning. Ensuring support for impacted travel agents is essential for maintaining the industry’s integrity and competitiveness.

Rex Airlines has been a vital connection for regional and rural Australia, and its administration is a blow to these communities and the competitive landscape of Australian aviation. Long expressed hope that Rex could navigate this period and continue operations, ensuring that travel professionals work tirelessly to find solutions for affected travellers.

The ATIA remains committed to advocating for measures safeguarding the travel industry’s interests during these challenging times.

In a related appeal, the United Services Union (USU), which represents front-line customer service staff, has called on the Albanese government to cover the entitlements of Rex workers who risk losing their jobs and legal entitlements. USU General Secretary Graeme Kelly criticized Rex’s management for failing to discuss with the union earlier and not setting aside funds to pay the workers.

“The Albanese Government needs to step in and make sure these workers are looked after,” said Kelly. The union is now collaborating with the administrator to protect member entitlements and save as many jobs as possible.
