This flight is not merely a gesture but a testament to women’s strides in aviation, a sector historically dominated by men. Deborah Lawrie, Australia’s first female pilot for a major airline, took the controls of VA313. Lawrie’s participation comes nearly a quarter-century after her historic High Court discrimination case victory. This verdict has paved the way for countless women to follow in her flight path.

The initiative, a collaborative effort involving Virgin Australia, Melbourne Airport, Brisbane Airport Corporation, and Airservices Australia, marks its second year celebrating the achievements and potential of women in aviation. Over 30 women, encompassing roles from baggage handlers to air traffic controllers, joined forces to ensure the flight’s success, demonstrating the diverse opportunities available in the industry.

Jayne Hrdlicka, Virgin Australia’s CEO, reflected on the journey toward gender equality in aviation, expressing pride in the visible progress and the role models inspiring future generations. This flight was not just a celebration but a forward-looking gesture, aiming to encourage more women to pursue diverse and fulfilling careers in aviation.

Upon arrival in Brisbane, the all-female crew engaged with over 50 female aviation students in a networking event, sharing insights and advice to fuel the aspirations of the next wave of women in aviation. The event underscored the industry’s commitment to nurturing talent and ensuring that the sky is the limit for women’s achievements in aviation.

Virgin Australia’s IWD flight is a beacon of progress, highlighting the significant strides made towards gender equality in aviation and the ongoing efforts to ensure a more inclusive and equitable future.
