Australia’s award-winning Aurora Spa Group opens the doors to The Bathhouse – the final element of Aurora Spa & Bathhouse – its new flagship location in Victoria’s idyllic coastal town of Sorrento.
Conceived by Australian wellness expert and entrepreneur, Lyndall Mitchell, Aurora’s 500m2 Bathhouse is a groundbreaking wellness experience that features one of the largest saunas in the southern hemisphere, as well as a custom-made and first of its kind, ‘Glacial Mist Room’.
Accommodating up to 60 guests at a time, the Aurora Spa & Bathhouse offers a year-round indoor bathing experience without interruption from the elements. Guests can explore the subterranean space at their leisure or follow Aurora’s Bathing Ritual – a ten-step immersive bathing journey with a circuit of hot and cold experiences designed for optimal wellbeing and featuring hydro massage elements, and magnesium mineral rich waters.
In the bathhouse guests begin with a cleansing botanical salt ritual, progressing into the sky-lit Daydream Pool (36 degrees), before entering the cold plunge (10 degrees), reflexology pool (37 degrees) and vitality pool (35 degrees). Sensory showers and additional contrast therapy experiences follow, including: a timber-lined Nordic sauna, aromatherapy steam room, halotherapy (salt) suite, and the aptly named ‘Centella Thermal Lounges’. Above, ‘Floating Centella’, a unique art installation hand-sculpted in copper depicts the coastal alkaline scrub, which is native to the Mornington Peninsula and is a representation of longevity.
The Bathhouse’s Glacial Mist Room is its pièce de résistance and is custom-designed to recreate the elements indoors, including mist, rain and ice – and for the very first time, wind. Set at a perfect alpine temperature of between 6-10 degrees, it’s a refined version of the Finnish tradition of rolling in the snow after a sauna.
As well as offering guests timeless bathing traditions with a modern twist, Aurora Spa & Bathhouse provides spa treatments, meditation, wellness coaching and retreats; and an elegant Aurora Spa Store features an array of carefully curated items, allowing guests to take home a little piece of their wellness experience.
Aurora Spa & Bathhouse Founder Lyndall Mitchell shares: “Bringing Aurora Spa & Bathhouse to life has been an extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I drew inspiration from my experiences around the world, honing in on the healing power of water and the traditions of European bathing culture. Water is powerful. Just like breath, we depend on it for life. We are naturally drawn to it – individually, collectively, emotionally, spiritually. Water symbolises life, creation, cleansing and transformation, and is often used as a metaphor for self-discovery.”
“On the coast of the Mornington Peninsula, we are surrounded by water, even breathing the fresh sea air has its own healing energy. Now that we are open, we look forward to our guests experiencing the essence of wellbeing with time to pause, reflect, relax, reconnect and restore body and mind at Aurora Bathhouse & Spa.”
Adjacent to Aurora Spa and Bathhouse, at the heart of The Continental Sorrento, is The Atrium – a timeless, conservatory-style dining space welcoming guests into an elegant space, filled with the spirit of a by-gone era. Under a dramatic five-metre high glass vaulted ceiling, the impressive light-filled space blurs the boundaries between indoors and outdoors and is the perfect place to unwind, pre or post an Aurora Spa & Bathhouse experience, dining on a menu specially created by Scott Pickett in collaboration with Mitchell.
Located only an hour away from Melbourne and designed by award-winning design studio, Woods Bagot, guests will find many opportunities to pause, reset and replenish within the luxurious wellness sanctuary that is Aurora Spa & Bathhouse. Drawing inspiration from the Mornington Peninsula coastline, the design features a warm neutral palette, soft oak panelling, brass accents and sandy terracotta terrazzo tiles underfoot.
