South Africa has won the adventure travel vote. It beat the United States and Argentina in a new Global Rescue survey. That should please the country’s tourism trade. The lions, one assumes, were not given a ballot.
South Africa led the overall list. The US came second, followed by Argentina, Canada and New Zealand. The poll ran from 6 to 10 October 2026. It asked well-travelled people to name their favourite adventure spots. It did not measure bookings, safety or the quality of each destination.
The appeal is easy to see. South Africa offers game drives near Kruger National Park, walks in the Drakensberg and a coastline worth exploring. Not every holiday needs to be spent by a pool.
Nepal Takes the Lead Beyond America
The US and the rest of the world chose differently.
Americans picked South Africa first. The US, Argentina, New Zealand and Canada filled the next four spots. But non-US respondents chose Nepal, with Italy second. Australia, Mongolia and South Africa shared third place.
People outside the US were almost eight times as likely as Americans to choose Nepal. They were nearly 14 times as likely to pick Mongolia. US respondents, by contrast, were almost seven times as likely to favour New Zealand.
For travel agents, this is a useful lesson. The same sales pitch will not appeal to every market.
Men and Women Choose Different Paths
Men ranked South Africa first, followed by Argentina, the US, Canada and Australia. Women chose the US, then South Africa, New Zealand, Argentina and Italy.
Men were nearly three times as likely to favour Canada. Women were almost 50 per cent more likely to select New Zealand.
“Adventure has no single capital,” said Dan Richards, CEO of The Global Rescue Companies. “South Africa leads the overall ranking, but the differences between groups show why there is no one-size-fits-all adventure traveler. A favorite destination is a personal choice, not a universal prescription.”
The Trip Still Needs a Safety Plan
Australians keen to go still need to plan ahead. As at 4 November 2026, Smartraveller advises a high degree of caution in South Africa due to violent crime. It also urges visitors to use skilled guides near wild animals. In remote areas, medical evacuation may be needed.
Global Rescue provides medical and security aid to paying members. It has a commercial interest in such advice. Even so, the point stands. Match the trip to the traveller, check local advice and plan for things going wrong.
A great adventure should leave you with stories, not an urgent call for rescue.

Michelle Warner has always carried stories the way others carry passports lightly, faithfully, and with purpose. She learned her craft in newsrooms, shaping sentences with care, before swapping deadlines for departures as a flight attendant with some of the world’s great airlines. Years aloft sharpened her eye for character and deepened her fondness for the small, dignified rituals of travel, the quiet kindness of strangers, the poetry of arrival, the patience learned between time zones.
Now grounded by choice, Michelle has come home to writing with the same calm authority she once brought to turbulent cabins. Her prose blends an editor’s discipline with a traveller’s wonder, tinged with humour and reverence for the golden age of travel. Each piece feels like a handwritten boarding pass, gracious, observant, and unmistakably alive.
