Spread the love

Wooden chalets, old-town squares and Central European cities tend to dominate the Christmas-market conversation. But Europe’s coast is not just for summer. This year, Rail Europe heads to the sea for five festive breaks with a rather different backdrop.

For travellers who want the Christmas-market atmosphere without simply repeating the classics, the list stretches from the Baltic and Bay of Biscay to the Adriatic and Mediterranean. All five destinations can be reached on rail journeys available through Rail Europe.

Travemünde, Germany – Christmas with a Baltic backdrop

Travemünde, Lübeck’s seaside resort on the Baltic, puts a maritime spin on the traditional German Christmas market. Its Schiff Ahoi market takes over the Ostpreußenkai and cruise terminal, with crafts, festive food and live entertainment right beside the harbour.

Here, a walk along the waterfront can easily come before the mulled wine.

Direct trains from Hamburg to Lübeck-Travemünde Hafen take from around 1 hour 14 minutes and can be booked through Rail Europe.

Trieste, Italy: a Central European Christmas by the Adriatic

Trieste’s Christmas atmosphere reflects the city itself: Italian, Adriatic and strongly shaped by its Central European past. Habsburg architecture, historic cafés and the waterfront make it an unusual Italian choice for a festive break.

The city’s Christmas markets return to the historic centre in 2026, with festive stalls and seasonal food across streets and squares within easy walking distance of the sea.

Trieste also works well as an addition to a Venice trip. Direct trains from Venice take from around 1 hour 33 minutes and can be booked through Rail Europe.

Saint-Malo, France: Christmas behind the ramparts

Saint-Malo brings Christmas to ne of France’s most distinctive coastal settings. The Breton city is known for its ods stone ramparts, beaches and maritime history, and in winter the Christmas market is another reason to visit.

From 27 November to 2 January 2027, the market returns to Esplanade Saint Vincent, beside the historic walled city, with festive stalls and seasonal celebrations just a short walk from the sea.

Direct trains from Paris to Saint-Malo take from around 2 hours 14 minutes.

San Sebastián, Spain – Christmas on the Bay of Biscay

San Sebastián may be better known for La Concha, pintxos  (Basque-tyle small bites) and summer weekends, but the Basque city has a very different feel in winter.

From 1 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, its Christmas market returns to Paseo del Urumea and Plaza Ramón Labayen, bringing stalls and festive lights to the heart of the city, with the coast never far away.

Direct trains from Madrid to San Sebastián take from around 4 hours 47 minutes and can be booked through Rail Europe.

Monaco – Christmas with Mediterranean charm

Monaco takes the coastal Christmas idea in a rather different direction.

The Principality’s Christmas Village returns to Quai Albert Ier from 4 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. This year’s theme, The Enchanted Forest, will bring Christmas chalets, food stalls and attractions to the harbour – a long way, visually at least, from the traditional Alpine market.

Monaco is also an easy addition to a French Riviera rail trip. Direct trains from Nice take from just 14 minutes, with tickets available through Rail Europe.

The Christmas-market tradition is still very much part of the trip; the difference is what surrounds it. The Baltic coast, the Adriatic and even a winter walk beside the Mediterranean can all provide a change from the more familiar festive destinations.

For travellers planning more than one stop, these places can also form part of a wider European rail itinerary. Rail Europe brings together journeys across countries and operators in one place, making it easier to venture beyond the usual Christmas-market circuit
