Viking has raised the curtain on two new European river journeys for 2030. Both pair the once-a-decade Oberammergau Passion Play with voyages along the Rhine or Danube. It is a neat union of faith, history, and scenery, with someone else taking care of the luggage.

Departures will operate from May to September 2030. Both itineraries include preferred seating at the 43rd Passion Play in Oberammergau, Bavaria.

The village first staged the production in 1634 after residents made a vow during the plague of 1633. The official Passion Play organisation confirms that its next season will take place in 2030.

“Our guests are curious travellers who value meaningful cultural experiences and a deeper understanding of the places they visit,” said Leah Talactac, President and CEO of Viking. We have welcomed guests to the Oberammergau Passion Play for two previous instalments and are pleased to introduce these new itineraries for 2030. By pairing this extraordinary event with a Rhine or Danube voyage, guests can explore some of Europe’s most historic destinations while experiencing a tradition that has endured for nearly 400 years.”

The first itinerary, Oberammergau, Innsbruck & the Rhine, runs for 13 days from Amsterdam to Munich. Guests will sail through the UNESCO-listed Middle Rhine, where castles sit above the river as though competing for the best view.

The itinerary also encompasses the food and wine traditions of Alsace, the alpine drama of Innsbruck and the Passion Play itself. An overnight stay in Munich brings down the final curtain.

The second option, Oberammergau with Salzburg, is a 12-day cruise-tour from Oberammergau to Budapest.

It begins with the Passion Play, then moves through Bavaria and Salzburg before joining the Danube. The voyage visits Germany, Austria and Hungary.

Salzburg adds Mozart, baroque beauty and The Sound of Music scenery enough culture to keep even the keenest theatre-goer happily occupied between acts.

Viking says it has hosted guests at the Passion Play since 2010. It also describes itself as the organisers’ leading North American partner.

That longstanding connection matters. Tickets and accommodation in and around Oberammergau are in high demand whenever the production returns, so planning well ahead is not simply wise; it is practically part of the dress code.

The commercial case is equally clear. Travellers receive access to a rare cultural event as part of a carefully planned European holiday. They do not need to piece together theatre tickets, accommodation, transfers and travel through several countries on their own.

Travel advisers gain access to a premium product with a strong story, a long booking window, and built-in urgency. After all, saying, “We’ll catch the next one,” means waiting another decade.

Viking has also launched a dedicated Oberammergau information hub. It covers the play’s history, cultural background and destination information.

Further details about the new itineraries are available through Viking’s official Australian website.

The company’s Summer Sale runs until 31 July 2026 for North American travellers. It includes reduced fares, up to free international airfare on selected voyages and a US$25 deposit.

Australian travellers should consult Viking Australia or contact a travel adviser for applicable local prices, terms and promotional offers.

For the travel trade, the launch is more than another river program. It packages a scarce cultural milestone with familiar European drawcards and the comfort of a structured voyage.

In 2030, Oberammergau will once again command the stage. Viking intends to make the journey there almost as memorable as the performance.

She learned her craft in newsrooms, shaping sentences with care, before swapping deadlines for departures as a flight attendant with some of the world’s great airlines. Years aloft sharpened her eye for character and deepened her fondness for the small, dignified rituals of travel, the quiet kindness of strangers, the poetry of arrival, the patience learned between time zones.
Now grounded by choice, Michelle has come home to writing with the same calm authority she once brought to turbulent cabins. Her prose blends an editor’s discipline with a traveller’s wonder, tinged with humour and reverence for the golden age of travel. Each piece feels like a handwritten boarding pass, gracious, observant, and unmistakably alive.
