This week, AAT Kings Group hosted a special fireside chat at its Sydney offices with renowned British artist Bruce Munro, creator of the acclaimed Field of Light. The conversation, led by AAT Kings CEO Ben Hall, celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the installation at Uluṟu and explored the inspiration behind one of Australia’s most remarkable immersive art experiences.
Munro reflected on the journey that led to the creation of Field of Light, from studying painting and sculpture in the UK to spending eight years living in Australia, where he worked various jobs believing he could not make a living as an artist. A trip through Australia with his wife Serena became a turning point, with Uluṟu’s vast desert landscape and powerful natural environment inspiring a new creative direction.
“The experience I had in Uluṟu was so strong and powerful in terms of connecting me to the world around me, but it also made me feel part of something very big. I thought to myself – that’s what art is about. Field of Light really is an expression of the joy that I found in that amazing place. It’s about being at one with the world and feeling very excited about it,” said Munro.
Now marking its 10-year anniversary, Field of Light has become one of Australia’s most celebrated immersive art installations, drawing visitors from around the world to experience the desert illuminated by thousands of glowing stems. Munro and Hall also discussed how AAT Kings brings this spectacle to travellers through its exclusive Field of Light Sunrise experience, where guests can witness the installation as the first light of dawn appears over Uluṟu.
“In the morning you have this incredible opportunity to see the light coming behind it,” Munro said.
Through experiences like the Field of Light Sunrise tour, AAT Kings continues to connect travellers with extraordinary moments in Australia’s natural and cultural landscapes. Reflecting on the installation’s decade-long impact, Munro described the work simply as a gesture “to say thank you to nature.”
“During its ten years, Bruce’s Field of Light Installation has become a bucket list item for travellers visiting the incredible Uluṟu.” says CEO of AAT Kings Group, Ben Hall. “We’re proud that AAT Kings has helped so many guests experience this remarkable installation at sunrise – a moment that captures the magic of the landscape and Bruce’s extraordinary vision.”
