Sydney Airport, Australia’s busiest domestic hub, is embarking on its first significant upgrade in over three decades with an ambitious $200 million overhaul of the T2 Domestic terminal. The redevelopment promises to revolutionize the passenger experience through cutting-edge technology, enhanced security processes, and a seamless journey from curbside to airside.

This transformative project serves over 17 million passengers annually and aims to set a new benchmark in airport efficiency, comfort, and innovation. Once completed, 95% of passengers are expected to move from the curbside to the airside in under 15 minutes, dramatically improving processing times and operational efficiency.

Streamlined Check-In and Baggage Processing

A core focus of the T2 upgrade is streamlining the check-in and baggage handling experience. Introducing additional self-service kiosks and next-generation bag-drop technology will empower passengers to manage their check-in process more efficiently.

Currently, T2 processes 1,500 bags per hour during peak periods. The planned upgrades will increase this capacity to 1,800 bags per hour by 2026, ensuring the terminal can easily handle future passenger demand.

Revolutionary Security Enhancements

In compliance with the Australian Government’s mandate to implement “standard three” security measures by the end of 2025, Sydney Airport is rolling out next-generation security screening technologies across seven newly designed lanes, each spanning 26 meters. These state-of-the-art lanes allow passengers to leave liquids and laptops in their carry-on luggage, significantly reducing security screening times.

With each lane capable of processing 500 passengers per hour—a 113% improvement on current throughput—security efficiency will be a game-changer for travellers. The new design will also include dedicated lanes for families and assistance needs, making the experience more inclusive and accessible.

Elevating the Passenger Journey

The overhaul doesn’t stop at operational efficiency. Sydney Airport is also focused on creating a more enjoyable passenger journey. The revamped terminal will include two new lifts connecting passengers to the food court and gate lounges, providing easier access and greater convenience.

Our aim is to enhance every aspect of the passenger journey, from check-in to take-off, delivering a world-class experience for travelers and airline partners alike.”

T1 International Upgrades on Track for 2025 Completion

Sydney Airport’s modernization extends beyond T2, with significant upgrades underway at the T1 International terminal. These enhancements include introducing 15 advanced CT scanning security lanes, allowing passengers to keep liquids and aerosols in their hand luggage, and increasing screening capacity by nearly 30%.

Reorientating the departure layout will streamline passenger flow by moving security screening ahead of passport control. This redesign will also create over 300 square meters of retail space, further elevating the terminal’s offerings.

Two new lanes are already operational; the full rollout is expected by late 2025. This will boost passenger throughput from 4,500 to 5,850 per hour.

Strengthening Capacity with the South-East Sector Project

In a separate milestone, Sydney Airport recently opened a section of its $169 million South-East sector project. This initiative, designed to meet growing aviation demand, includes the addition of four new Code E apron bays and upgrading existing parking areas to accommodate wide-body aircraft like the A380.

The development also features 1.5 kilometres of new taxiways and a state-of-the-art fuel primary to support next-generation aircraft. Once completed, these enhancements will bolster the airport’s resilience and operational capacity.

A Visionary Investment for the Future

Sydney Airport’s nearly $2 million daily investment in infrastructure, technology, and facilities underscores its commitment to maintaining its status as a global leader in aviation. The airport currently welcomes 120,000 passengers daily—equivalent to sell-out crowds at Stadium Australia, Sydney SuperDome, and Sydney Showground combined.

While the upgrades may cause temporary disruptions, Charlton emphasized the long-term benefits: “We appreciate the patience of our passengers and airline partners as we undergo these essential improvements. These changes are critical to ensuring Sydney Airport remains a leader in efficiency, innovation, and passenger experience.”
