Turkish Airlines LogoIn a groundbreaking move for Australian and international aviation, Sydney Airport will soon host the first-ever non-stop flights to Istanbul, courtesy of Turkish Airlines. This momentous announcement, set to redefine Australia-Europe air travel, is expected to take off in December 2024, initially with four weekly services. These flights will commence with a brief stopover in Kuala Lumpur before transitioning to complete non-stop services in a matter of months. This marks a significant new chapter in Sydney’s status as Australia’s premier global gateway.

Turkish Airlines’ decision to launch direct flights from Sydney to Istanbul solidifies its role as a global leader in aviation. It showcases Sydney’s strategic importance as a hub for international travel. The new services will offer Australians a seamless connection to over 340 destinations across 130 countries, including 110 European cities—more than any other airline globally.

A Game-Changer for Australian Travel

On December 5, 2024, Turkish Airlines will operate four weekly flights from Sydney to Istanbul via Kuala Lumpur on the state-of-the-art Airbus A350-900. This aircraft features 32 business class seats and 297 economy class seats, ensuring luxury and comfort for all passengers.

However, the eventual shift to non-stop services from Sydney to Istanbul sets this route apart—an Australian first. For travellers, this means a faster, more convenient route to Türkiye, cutting travel times and enhancing the overall flying experience. Istanbul, already one of the world’s most dynamic cities, serves as Turkish Airlines’ expansive global hub, allowing travellers to connect to more than 340 destinations and opening up exciting opportunities for leisure, business, and cultural exchange.

Economic and Tourism Boost for New South Wales

The impact of this new route is expected to reverberate well beyond aviation circles. According to Destination NSW, the Turkish Airlines service is projected to inject more than $53 million into the local economy within its first year of operation, creating over 290 new jobs in New South Wales (NSW). With Sydney already accounting for 38% of Australia-Europe air traffic, the new flights will further cement the city’s role as Australia’s international gateway.

Scott Charlton, CEO of Sydney Airport, hailed the move as pivotal for the airport and the state of NSW. “This new service strongly honours Sydney’s status as a world-class destination. It offers passengers unparalleled access to Europe and beyond via Turkish Airlines’ Istanbul hub,” he said. Charlton also emphasized the service’s potential to deepen ties between Türkiye and Australia, noting that over 15,000 Turkish-born Australians reside in NSW.

NSW Minister for Jobs and Tourism, John Graham, echoed these sentiments, calling the new route a “game-changer” for the state’s tourism economy. “Direct flights between Sydney and Istanbul will provide European travellers with unprecedented access to NSW’s world-class visitor experiences,” he remarked, adding that the NSW government worked closely with Turkish Airlines and Sydney Airport to make this new service a reality.

A New Milestone for Turkish Airlines

The Sydney-Istanbul route represents another significant expansion for Turkish Airlines, which continues to grow its global footprint. Turkish Airlines Chairman, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bolat, described the new service as a milestone for the airline. “Sydney represents a vibrant gateway to the Southern Hemisphere, and we are thrilled to offer our travelers unparalleled access to this dynamic city,” he said.

Bolat further emphasized Turkish Airlines’ commitment to connecting people and cultures, noting the importance of expanding its network in Australia. “This expansion underscores our dedication to growing our network and providing exceptional service, bridging continents and bringing people closer together,” he said.

For Turkish Airlines, the new Sydney route is a strategic business decision that reflects the airline’s broader goal of enhancing connectivity between continents and offering top-tier service to its passengers.

Strengthening Ties Between Türkiye and Australia

The announcement of the non-stop service to Istanbul comes when Türkiye is rapidly rising in popularity among Australian travellers. Türkiye has consistently been one of the top destinations for Australian tourists, thanks to its rich history, diverse cultural experiences, and unique geographical beauty. The new non-stop service will allow Australians to explore the vibrant streets of Istanbul, visit ancient landmarks like Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, and easily connect to other European and Middle Eastern destinations.

The direct flights will also cater to the sizeable Turkish-Australian community, particularly in NSW, offering faster and more convenient travel for those visiting family and friends in Türkiye. Prof. Dr Bolat noted, “These new direct flights will boost access to NSW from key European markets via Istanbul, enhancing both leisure and family travel.”

A Catalyst for Future Growth

The launch of Turkish Airlines’ nonstop service from Sydney to Istanbul is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting period of growth for both the airline and Sydney Airport. The airport has welcomed eight new airlines over the past two years, and Turkish Airlines is set to become its largest European carrier by 2024.

Sydney Airport’s CEO, Scott Charlton, expressed optimism about the future, stating, “We’re looking forward to Turkish Airlines’ inaugural flight and growing their services in the years to come.” This sentiment reflects the long-term potential of the route, both in terms of economic impact and the strengthening of international ties between Australia and Türkiye.

The anticipation is palpable as Turkish Airlines prepares for its inaugural flight to Sydney. This new service promises to revolutionize travel between Australia and Europe, offering passengers a flight and a world of new possibilities.
