Nestled in the heart of Luberon, Coquillade Provence, originating from an 11th-century hamlet established by Cistercian monks and opened by Swiss visionary Andy Rihs in 2008, stands as a paragon of sustainability and luxury. As it continues to evolve, the resort, celebrated for its unparalleled location amidst lavender fields and undulating vineyards, is now enhancing its allure with five, new opulent suites, providing a quintessential Provençal living experience, complete with bespoke spa treatments and personalized services, making them a sanctuary within the region’s most coveted destination.
The new, top-tier suites, ranging in size from 645 square feet to 1,614 square feet, are in a separate wing of the resort with its own private entrance, and offer direct access to the resort’s spa—enabling guests to customize their well-being programming. Spacious and private, these suites are singular in their design and size for the Luberon. Uniquely named after a nymphe—Cyrène, Ida, Elysia, Daphné, and Cassiopée—each suite tells its own enchanting story, adding a touch of mythical charm to the stay.
Staying true to its pillars of culture, consciousness and community, Coquillade’s design team utilized antique selections curated from centuries-old shops in Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, known as the European antiques capital. A 19th century desk, or a late 18th century chair which has been re-upholstered to blend with modern day are highlighted as works of art. The interiors are also tributes to the quintessential style and craftsmanship of the region, showcasing the work of several local artisans. Wrought iron indoor and outdoor furniture from Avignon’s famed Maison Hervé Baume shares the elegant spaces with chandeliers from the esteemed Atelier of Mathieu Lustrerie, which has also completed restoration work at Château de Versailles, Musée du Louvre, Opéra Garnier and Villa Kérylos. The artwork gracing the walls is on loan from the private collection of Oliver and Tobias Rihs, whose father, Andy, founded Coquillade almost two decades ago. Not only did the Rihs brothers select the artworks to feature in each suite, but they personally oversaw the hanging of the art, selecting the perfect spot for each masterpiece.
Spacious, elegant, and comfortable, each of these suites feels like a home in Provence. On the terraces, hydrotherapy baths are embedded in the wooden decking, designed to emulate the Provençal “aiguier,” a pool dug into natural rock formations. Impressionist painting views of the hills and vineyards serve as the backdrop for each suite, which all come with spacious terraces, while the largest—Cassiopée—features a solarium, a lap pool and its own private sauna. If rented together, this exclusive wing of suites can house a total of 10 adults (with extra beds available for children), and several of the suites can be connected via a corridor and the terrace, so larger groups can stay en famille.
The gardens surrounding the suites are filled with Provençal flora, from oleander and rock rose to rosemary to cypress, olive, and cane apple trees. Even indoors, sunlight and the scent of lavender and pine trees waft in through the floor-to-ceiling doors and windows. Bathrooms are a generous portion of the suite’s floor plan, complete with an oversized bathtub, separate shower and water closet with a Japanese toilet, independent sink vanities and other thoughtful amenities, while Rose et Marius, Provence’s haute parfumerie brand, provides the toiletries. Each suite also features its own cave à vin (wine fridge), complete with wines from Domaine de la Coquillade.
With private spa access (where new vinotherapy and phytotherapy treatments utilize the healing powers of the grapes and herbs grown on site), a catering kitchen for visiting chefs’ use, and concierge and butler service upon request, these suites— unequivocally the largest, most beautifully designed suites in the Luberon—invite guests to embrace the Provençal art of living.
The new suites form the perfect trifecta of accommodations at the 69-room “destination within a destination” that is Coquillade Provence. Now, guests can choose from traditional Bastide-style rooms that are housed in the stone farmhouses emblematic of the region that pepper the property, or from the contemporary rooms that were added just a few years ago which evoke the notable style of Provence with all the amenities today’s modern traveler has come to expect. Further, the property boasts a private Pool Suite—part of a five-bedroom villa—which can also be fully rented as a stand-alone home ideal for families and small groups, or the brand’s pièce de resistance, the Bastide Les Vallats, a private villa located 20 minutes from the property and can fit up to 14 guests in seven bedrooms.
