As Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga opens at cinemas nationally, and the twelve-month anniversary of the passing of Tina Turner is marked today, Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash organisers are gearing up for the biggest iteration of the iconic outback event that will celebrate both milestones this August.
The 2024 Mundi Mundi Bash will once again pay tribute to the legendary Tina Turner with a new Nutbush World Record attempt (the current world record of 6,594 boot-scooters was set by the Mundi Mundi Bash in August 2023) and celebrate the launch of Furiosa by attempting to set a new world record for the largest Mad Max gathering ever on the very site that scenes for the new movie were filmed.
The Nutbush World Record attempts at the Mundi Mundi Bash and sister event the Birdsville Big Red Bash have raised more than $500,000 for the Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS) since 2016.
Following the release of Furiosa the Mundi Mundi setting will be the ideal backdrop for the world record breaking attempt as festival goers choose their tribe and maraud the Plains to bring the world record for The Largest Gathering of Mad Max Characters back to home turf when the event is staged in August 2024.
With Mundi Mundi Bash numbers growing to a record 14,000 festival goers this year, cementing it as the biggest event ever staged in Outback NSW, event organisers are confident new world records will be set on the red earth of the Mundi Mundi Plains.
“Between the Mundi Mundi Bash and the Big Red Bash we’ve been smashing Nutbush world records for nearly a decade now. Last year after Tina’s passing was particularly big, everyone rallied to pay tribute to her, and we had a lot of our Nutbushers dressed up as Tina – in her famous Mad Max outfit. Her legacy lives on through the uniquely Aussie tradition of the Nutbush and we’ve been told that Tina herself was aware of our annual Nutbush world record attempts in Outback Australia. We’re hoping the Big Red Bash might be able to break the current Mundi Mundi Bash record in July, and that the Mundi Mundi Bash will claim it back again in August as our event numbers have grown from just over 12,000 to close to 14,000 heading to the Mundi Mundi Plains,” said Festival owner and Managing Director of the Outback Music Festival Group Greg Donovan.
And with new Mad Max characters from Furiosa to base costumes on and all the hype around the movie we’re hoping that the Mad Max record may also be beaten. George Miller used our event site to set up for filming Furiosa out on Belmont Station in the heart of the Mundi Mundi Plains. We loved seeing his set up surrounded by the rings of our Bash campsite in aerial photos taken over the site when they were filming.”
Tim Rogers, who will perform in the Rolling Stones Revue with Adalita, Phil Jameson and Tex Perkins at the Mundi Mundi Bash also features in Furiosa said his costume for the movie is “awesome”. Rogers is looking forward to performing on the Mundi Mundi Bash stage again and said, “The almost lunar landscape and beautiful wide surrounds of the Mundi Mundi Plains command respect and awe. And aweful I am. Mundi is a big swirling mass of joy. And caravan pornography. Which makes it a swirling mass of joy to be part of.”
The Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash event will become a costume Thunderdome on the final day of the three-day music festival, with festival goers hoping to set a new world record for The Largest Gathering Of Mad Max Characters in one location on Saturday August 17, 2024.
The current world record of 2,500 participants in Mad Max themed costumes is held by the Wastelands Festival in California.
The sold-out Mundi Mundi Bash will run from August 15-17, 2024 and will feature a stellar line-up of Australian rock legends including James Reyne, Jon Stevens, The Living End, Ian Moss, Daryl Braithwaite, Diesel, Tim Finn, Baby Animals, Vanessa Amorosi, Mark Seymour, The Rolling Stones Revue (starring Adalita, Phil Jamison, Tex Perkins & Tim Rogers), Richard Clapton, Casey Barnes, Bjorn Again, Chocolate Starfish – Bat Out of Hell, Pierce Brothers, Shane Howard, Ash Grunwald, Fanny Lumsden, Furnace & the Fundamentals, Sarah McLeod, Hayley Mary, Mundi Mundi Bash Band, Tha Boiz and Leroy Johnson & The Waterbag Band.
George Miller also chose the Mundi Mundi Plains to film spectacular Mad Max II scenes, with movie goers today set to see the red earth landscape featuring in Furiosa Mad Max starring Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy.
The Largest Gathering Of Mad Max Characters world record attempt will be staged back-to-back with the Nutbush City Limits World Record dance off attempt, with festival goers encouraged to come dressed in Mad Max themed costumes.
The Australian Book Of Records (TABOR) will be adjudicating all world and national records attempted at both the Bash events.
The Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash is an all-ages, dog-friendly camping event that offers up a uniquely Australian adventure for families, grey nomads, camping and caravanning enthusiasts and intrepid travelers.
The event features a wide-ranging program of outback activities – from the Nutbush City Limits World Record dance off attempt and Mad Max costume dress up world record attempt to morning yoga, dunny door painting, comedy and outdoor film screenings, scenic helicopter flights, camel rides and charity initiatives like ‘Mundi Undie Run’ – raising funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
The Big Blue Day for Beyond Blue will also be launched at the Mundi Mundi Bash in 2024 attempting to beat the world record for the largest human image of a country that was set at the 2023 Big Red Bash.
The Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash is supported by the NSW Government via Destination NSW.
