The moors and tors of Dartmoor – new-look UK walking holiday
Special offer for Australians and New Zealanders
Free dinner in a charming British inn – book by August 31, 2024
Led by the principle that the slower you travel, the more you learn, European self-guided walk operator, On Foot Holidays, has unveiled a new version of its popular hiking holiday across the wild moors and tors of Dartmoor in Devon to take in more of the spectacular rock formations that have inspired fables and folklore for centuries.
And to make the new-look, self-guided, luggage-free walking route even more alluring, On Foot Holidays is offering Australians and New Zealanders a free dinner in a charming British inn where hikers spend one of the nights during the walk. Book by August 31, 2024.
The seven-night Devon walk showcases some of the UK’s prettiest scenery including the wild Dartmoor countryside as well as nearby castles, abbeys and manor houses. The hike also features places of literary interest, including a visit to Greenway – the former holiday home of bestselling crime novelist Agatha Christie – and the rugged, tor-studded moors of Dartmoor made famous by the Sherlock Holmes novel, ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’.
Tors are hill-top outcrops of grey granite that are places of myth and legend in Dartmoor, with On Foot Holidays’ new route across the moors embracing some of the most spectacular high points, including Hound Tor, named for its supposed resemblance to huge dogs.
The adventure begins in Exeter, with the first day of walking following the Teign River upstream through a deep gorge and featuring visits to an Iron Age fort and Castle Drogo – which, dating from 1930, is the last castle to be built in England. The walking continues through lofty moorland the following days, with impressive 360-degree views greeting travellers on fine days.
The countryside slowly transitions into woodland and pastures as travellers approach journey’s end, the picturesque village of Dartmouth.
Along the way, guests will stay in traditional country inns and B&Bs. The route can be walked from April through to November, and is medium in difficulty, with three to six hours of walking each day.
Including seven nights’ accommodation, all breakfasts, two picnics and all luggage transfers – meaning walkers only carry a day pack – the self-guided tour costs from £1125 per person, twin-share (approximately A$2156 depending on exchange rates).
* Australians and New Zealanders who book the walk before August 31, 2024, will receive the exclusive bonus of a free dinner at the character-filled Rock Inn in Haytor where hikers will spend a night on the trek (up to £30 per head – quote ROCK30 when booking)
