Camping is a rite of passage for plenty of Aussies at Easter, but for those pitching the idea to the family for the first time, powering up an off-grid campsite is no small feat, but when it’s done, you know you’re in for a treat.

“Being ill-prepared for an off-grid camping trip is the biggest error you can make and could ruin what would otherwise be an enjoyable break,” said Battery World Outdoor Adventure Ambassador John Kilby.

“As a camping enthusiast, my suggestion for a ‘fun in the sun’ kind of Easter camping trip is solar. It really makes camping easier, and more energy efficient.”

A poorly planned camping trip, especially with the family in tow, can lead to some ‘in-tents’ situations and plenty of not-so-happy campers.

“With more and more people enjoying off-grid in a bid to be fully disconnected from work, the best thing about a portable solar power set-up is you always have a source of power (provided the sun is out). Smaller, lighter solar blankets for easier portability make your outdoor adventure ‘eggcellent’,” Mr Kilby added, with a grin.

There are plenty of spots to set up camp for the long weekend or the entirety of the school holidays, but wherever Aussies are headed, it is crucial to plan.

While solar is a great way to power your camping passion, it’s just as important to pack the essentials, especially if you’re heading to a remote, far-flung destination.

“A good quality deep cycle battery to power the fridge is crucial – we don’t want everyone to crack it on Easter Saturday!

“I always recommend taking along battery boxes to place your batteries in too,” Mr Kilby added.

“Some battery boxes are multi-functional — giving you outlets to plug all your devices into, including USB connections for your smart devices and other DC outlet sockets. They may also monitor your battery’s voltage and state of charge.”

Whether experienced or otherwise, the team at Battery World is available to help you plan and power a great Aussie adventure.

BENEFITS OF A SOLAR CAMP SETUP

  • Quiet and odourless: Recharging with solar energy is silent and produces no emissions.
  • Eco-friendly option:  Recharging using solar energy creates clean energy, unlike running petrol-powered generators.
  • Safety: Solar doesn’t rely on fossil fuel to run, making it a kid-friendly and safe option, especially when camping in the bush or high-shrub areas.
  • Long-lasting: Investing in good quality solar panels will maximise their working life.
  • Easy to use: Solar panels are easy to use and super versatile. They enable you to park the tent in the shade and position the panels to take full advantage of the sun’s position and maximise the charging input—they can recharge and power up everything from your campsite, from torches to cameras and the all-important music device.
