Spread the love

My wife and I were privileged to meet and make friends with Toshihiro Mori of the Fukuoka Convention and Visitors Bureau. With his guidance, we were advised about some of the highlights of this fascinating city. It would take months to see it all, but I have highlighted just some in my series of articles. I took the opportunity to chat with Toshi-san about Fukuoka.

  • Briefly tell me about the value for money here.

Fukuoka City is one of the most cost-effective tourist destinations. Hotel and restaurant prices are reasonable compared to other parts of Japan, transportation is convenient, and you can keep your tourist expenses low. Fukuoka also boasts fresh and diverse food cultures and is considered one of the cities in Japan with high-quality restaurants.

Furthermore, Fukuoka’s access from the airport to the city centre is excellent, and most of the significant spots are compactly located, making it easy to enjoy seeing around.

Ramen is very popular here; what makes it so unique?

Fukuoka’s ramen is characterized by its unique combination of thick pork bone soup and skinny noodles. The broth is made by boiling pork bones for a long time, producing a thick, rich soup. Fukuoka’s ramen is also known for its customizability, allowing you to choose the noodles’ firmness and order extra noodles (“kaedama”) if you want more. They are hardly found other than Fukuoka. Each ramen shop has different tastes, so you can enjoy various tonkotsu ramen and find your favourite one!
