The Year of the Dragon comes alive from this Thursday and through February as Sydney’s celebration of Lunar New Year glows in World Square, the colourful shopping and dining location connected to the city’s glorious Chinatown district.

With Lunar New Year officially marked for Saturday 10th February, World Square devotes two weekends of festivities as part of this month’s celebrations, and every day in between lit up with light, colour and spectacle. Highlights are the magnificent interactive dragon pagoda containing infinity mirrors, and lantern markets showing and selling multitudes of stunning lanterns that can be purchased and personally inscribed by Chinese calligraphy artists.

For many people, taking home their own intricately decorated Chinese lantern keeps the spirit of Lunar New Year alive for inspiration and illumination in the home or workplace. The lanterns are collectibles that also make exquisite gifts.

Entertainment includes traditional music, dragon and lion dancers with drummers circling the entire precinct, LED shows and spectacular decorations making World Square the ultimate New Year destination for all who celebrate this solemn, joyful and all-inclusive all-embracing time on the calendar.

There are 16 days of official celebration for Lunar New Year, encompassing the actual New Year, Red Dog Day, Visit of the Kitchen God, the God of Fortune’s birthday, Day of the Man and the God of Stone’s Birthday. World Square bookends these individually significant and symbolic dates and all the festive days and nights in between with two extraordinary weekends — 8th to 10th February and 22nd to 24th February.

The majestic dragon rules over all the World Square celebrations, with every corner of the shopping centre featuring decorations, red and gold glistening overhead. Outside the square in Liverpool Lane a colossal neon dragon features above. In the most exotically cultural end of Sydney’s CBD there will be no escaping the sheer magic of Lunar New Year.

On Saturday 24th February the epic Lantern Festival Day concludes the Lunar celebratory season at World Square.
