In an exclusive odyssey through the South Pacific’s jewel, Fiji, CNN’s series Fresh Routes unravels the intricate mosaic of cultural splendours that define this archipelago. Comprising over 300 islands, Fiji emerges not just as a tourism magnet but as a cradle of rich traditions, mesmerizing landscapes, and a culinary voyage that beckons the global wanderer.
Our journey commences at Malolo Lailai, a gem in the Mamanuca archipelago, a mere hour by sea from Fiji’s primary isle, Viti Levu. Here, we encounter Cakacaka, a local sage who escorts us through an authentic Fijian gastronomic adventure. This expedition commences with spearfishing, a time-honoured practice that Cakacaka has honed since their youth. He introduces us to ‘nama,’ locally known as seagrapes, a staple in Fijian gastronomy. The narrative then leads us to the historic Musket Cove Island Resort, Cakacaka’s workplace, where we delve into the art of crafting lolo, a traditional coconut cream, from the ground up. Musket Cove, a haven since 1976, continues to enchant with its marinas, sandy beaches, and luxurious villas.
Venturing further, CNN docks at Savusavu, nestled on Vanua Levu, Fiji’s second-largest isle. Here, we meet Neelam Rattan, a free-diving maestro who imparts her expertise to global enthusiasts. Rattan guides us to Natewa Bay, a rendezvous of rainforest and ocean. This bay, the largest in the South Pacific and one of the deepest is a sanctuary for thriving coral reefs and a kaleidoscope of marine life.
Our expedition culminates in Pacific Harbour, on Viti Levu’s shores. The annual “Woodstock Uprising Music Festival” pulsates here, showcasing Fiji’s diverse musical talents. We meet Laisa Vulakoro, the revered Vude Queen. Vude, an eclectic blend of island rhythms, reggae, disco, R&B, and Fijian harmonies, is a genre Vulakoro has championed globally. Despite her ascent to fame, Vulakoro faced formidable challenges, notably her battle with brain cancer in 2008. Yet, she continues to draw inspiration from Wainadoi, her serene abode amidst nature, a testament to her resilience and connection to her roots.
